Just saw this over at AreaDVD and they absolutely loved the Denon. I believe they thought it was better sounding than the AVC-A1XV (ABR-5805) even with the slightly lower DACs.

Interesting. I wonder if the Audyssey EQ was working properly in this one and the AVC-A1XV (ABR-5805) they tested has the same software bug as the US version, no bass correction.

BTW, the photos they show of the interiors of the 4806 and the 3805 should put to rest any concerns that the 4806 isn't a significant upgrade.

I wonder if they have it right that there are memories for 3 different Audyssey setups, as opposed to what Chris (Audyssey) said, that there are 3 options - Audyssey, Flat, and Front, of which only the first is MultEQ.

Maybe he was speaking specifically of the 5805, but I'd be surprised if the 4806 had more MultEQ capability.

All 3 modes use MultEQ. Flat and Audyssey EQ all speakers but with different target curves. Front EQs the center and surrounds to match the front L/R. Those 3 modes are most likely the memories mentioned in the article. It sounded to me like the 5805 and 4806 work the same when you factor in the language/translation issues.

Like I said, the only difference is the target curve. They all use MultEQ to achieve the target. Since speakers and room acoustics vary widely, everyone should try all 3 curves and use whichever one sounds best regardless of whether or not it has the blessing of Audessey. I quizzed Chris quite a bit about the Audessey curve and he said it's optimized for movies which makes sense since Tom Holman invented THX. Some people might not like the rolled off highs for music and apparently Denon agrees so they gave users a choice.

To my knowledge pretty much no one likes a flat response, and targeting the front isn't worth much because it does no room correction other than to make all the speakers sound like the fronts, as good or bad as that may be.

Bottom line to me is that there's only one worthwhile memory.

I just got my AVC-A11XV - and it is GREAT :-) - and Audyssey makes it even better :-)

Right now i'm battling to get my Panny 50" plasma to work with all the modes from the Amp - but that seems mostly due to problems from the Panny - and not the Denon.

in general - great!!!!! :-)

and it is loud... even though my old amp was the 170watt 1SE amp

go get it - it is worth it!

Well it depends on how you measure. If you use a gated MLS measurement to only measure the direct HF from the speakers and eliminate the room reflections, I prefer a flat response. If you do an ungated RTA measurement, that same speakers will show rolled off highs in most rooms due to room absorption.

Whatever, the fundamental problem remains. A target curve for movies, like THX equalization, won't be right for music and vice versa unless the movie has been remastered for the home. No single curve can do both equally well. Since Tom Holman developed the THX curve (see the red trace,) I'd be more than a little surprised if the Audyssey curve wasn't similar.

I can't wait until Kris gets his hands on one and measures what's really going on as we won't get any more than vague generalities from Chris.

I was a bit disappointed when I saw 4806 prototype in CES2005. As many others said, it looked closer to the upgraded 3805 than to downgraded 5805. However, the unit shown on the review looks totally different. It looks really like the downsized 5805! This must be pretty close to future-proof with all HDMI H/W and beefy 3 DA610 DSPs. Its MIPS headroom will likely support new DD+/DTS-HD if users are willing to give up some less used MIPS taking features. Very interesting.

Anyone here have any experience with a "Denon" etailer that is NOT on Denon's list?

I called DigitalCraze and am not too sure what to think!

I guess that really was a "mega-test" looks like they freaking disassembled the entire thing to look at the quality of the components.
