I've noticed a small hiss (static?) coming from my speakers/receiver, and am looking for some troubleshooting advice on how to pin down and eliminate this.

facts:

Yamaha HTR-5440, JBL Northridge series speakers

The sound is mainly coming from the tweeters of my fronts and my surrounds.

If I mute the receiver, the sound stops.

The volume of the hiss increases as the volume is turned up.

It doesn't seem to be source related (no audio input devices need to be turned on when hearing it).

It's quiet enough that I don't hear it at all when watching movies, but when I turn up music, I can detect it when listening to a very clean CD.

Sometimes, when I have the volume turned up very loud (and nothing playing), I can hear audio from my TiVO (Tivo is connected to receiver via RCA, and gets feed from coax cable wall jack), albiet faintly (very faintly... ie when ear pressed near speaker tweeter). Note: this is when the TiVO input on the receiver (DTV-Cable) is NOT active.

Using heavy gauge (don't recall exact specs) speaker wire from home depot.

Any ideas what to try to eliminate the hiss?

thanks,

Chris
