TBC is primarily for use with VCR's, it helps correct video problems caused by transcoding/upconverting the video from mostly only VCR's. It's not for correcting or eliminating audio delay.

I'm running JBL Northridge series: E90's fronts, EC35 Center, and E50's surround. My .1 is a H100 sub and all sounds good to me. Caveat, I have only calibrated using MCACC as I do not have a spl meter yet.

My friend just bought the 1016 yesterday from Best Buy.

We're going to construct a folding door with plexiglass this afternoon. No idea how it's going to "fold" yet, but we plan on using 2 mini "puck" magnets to hold the top of the door to the receiver. The space created by the magnets will clear the buttons on the face. One major drawback is that the receiver's front is not metal like the 1015 but plastic, so we'll have to add small, thin plates for the magnet to attract. The back of the plexiglass will be painted black so it won't be see through and match the receiver's paint.

I'm going to take pics of the building process as well as the end result.

No animals were harmed in the creation of this sentence.

I just got my 1016 and did the auto setup using MCACC. When I checked the settings, it had put my studio monitors (LRC) to LARGE. I set them back to small.

The sound is good right now (more later)...but my question is this: since I set the front and center speakers to SMALL, should I re-run the auto setup? Or will it just re-set them to LARGE?

Thanks

It will reset them to large.

Go to Radio Shack and get and SPL meter so that you can set the speaker levels yourself. There is no receiver on the market that has a properly functioning auto-setup. If you PM me I will give you detailed instructions on how to use the SPL meter. I assure you it takes less than 5 minutes to learn.

Eric --

Thanks for the feedback....I usually do use an SPL meter and do my own setup. But it was my understanding that the pink noise sweeps done by the MCACC are better able to correct for room anomolies than the simple tone level balancing. Is that not the case? I know that some programs have received bad marks for incorrect setup, but I have seen some good stuff on MCACC.

Anyhoo, I will PM you anyway and get your procedure....I am always looking for experienced input!

Thanks

BJ

Did you get a good price? Where did you get it from?

I think I've narrowed it down to an 81 or 82... unless I decide to pick up an open-box 1015 that has a great price...

But the real problem is, is that you seem to think a HDMI switch should include a LOT more functions than just switching.

As far as I can see the VSX-1016TXV works with a projector with HDMI input. I don't need any audio going to my projector.

I have a Pioneer 1014. I'm thinking about upgrading my receiver. Is it worth the money to buy the 1016? Can someone that used both comment? Thanks.

I actually have both. since they arn't connected to the same speakers, it is hard to hear if there is a difference in sound between the two. I think the 1016 sound a bit better, but it may be the room. I have the same center speaker connected to both.

Obviously the 1016 has the hdmi switching, and thus that is the one that is connected to the projector. The 1016 has 7.1 analogue inputs and it can do a 10db boost to the LFE. It also remembers which input had the analogue in so when you switch to the DVD it remembers that you had it set to the mutli in and thus you don't have to press the button on the front of the receiver like you must on the 1014.

The remote is basically the same.

Would I upgrade? Probably not, I don't think the sound is all that different for $400. You could spend that on something that would give you something really different, maybe a buttkicker or HD-A1, etc.

I'm thinking of upgrading because my 1014 has been acting weird lately. If I turn up the volume too loud, it turns off by itself. Then I have to turn it back on and lower the volume. It's annoying. I don't even turn it that loud either, just to -30.

There is something confusing me alot..

1) Since HDMI is only pass through (vedio only), does this mean I'll have to use audio cables from each input to the tv?? (do i have to use audio cable for dvd, sat, xbox360...etc? or do i use just one audio output from the reciever to the tv for all of these)... can u plz explaine to me...

2) does this HDMI convert analoge to HDMI or not? i know it has no upsacaling

3) Which one is better this model or the vsx-80txv..i know the 80 has multizone which is not here, but this one has THX?

4) if i chose another reciever that has analog to HDMI conversion (like the VSX-81TXV) will there be a significant change in output regarding audio/vedio quality?

as u all see, i'm newbie.. i've been reading alot in the past 2 weeks but the more i read, the more i get confused

thanks alot guys

In that case, yeah, I would think it would be worth the upgrade. -30 isn't that loud and I too would find that to be a bit of a pain.

Lets me try to answer the questions that I do know.
1. I'm going to assume that you will use the 1016 to power the speakers. In that case, you will run audio cables from the DVD player, sat, etc. to the 1016. You should think of the HDMI cable as just a video cable like a component cable.

2. A analogue signal stays analogue. If you want to have analogue too, you'll have to run an analogue cable between the receiver and the TV.

3. The best I can answer this is that the receiver are different. It really depends, are you going to use multizone? I run mine in a 7.1 setup and thus I wouldn't be able to use the multiple zones anyway. The THX certification is just that, a certification. Both receivers will give you excellent sound.

4. I don't think there wil be much difference, but I haven't tested it out, so I can't give you a definate answer.

Quick question guys... I've been readin about sony STR-DG800 which has HDMI pass through... here is the deal: If u connect ur device HDMI to this sony reciever, u will not hear sound through the reciever (only from TV speakers)...u'll have to connect ur HDMI device directly to the TV and use audio cables from ur device to the reciever in order to use ur custom speakers... is it the same situation here ? or will i be able to hear sound from my custom speakers if i connect my HDMI device to the reciever (and using audio cables as well)... Since they have both HDMI passthruogh, i was just getting confused...Thanks

Think of HDMI pass through as simply a video cable. And the receiver is a big switch. You'll need another cable to run audio.

With these receivers, you'll still connect the hdmi from device to receiver and receiver to TV via HDMI. And you'll make an audio connection.

You will not run any cables from the source to the TV without first connecting to the receiver.

Probably in Europe or Canada. We here in the US don't seem to get the silver option.
