I am in the same boat....... so post what you find!

I currently have the Pioneer Elite 84TXsi in my main theater, but need another AVR for a different room. The Pioneer has some known LFE issues, but my biggest problem has been with their HDMI implementation. For some unknown reason if you have a DVI equipped display the EDID information is getting truncated so you can only use the primary display frequency... which is a problem as the HD-DVD player still looks better in 1080i than it does in 720p. Each component works perfectly if run straight to the display, but when run through the 84 there are "issues." Supposedly there is a firmware release that is imminent and has been imminent for the last month or so, but I am not buying another one until I know they can fix the problems with the first one!

Sorry did not mean to jump off-topic, but for those of us that are more into Home Theater than audiophile music..., this whole HDMI issue has turned into a true "cluster-#@$%." With the consumer on the receiving end!

Which is why I am prowling around the 2700 thread as well as the Marantz 7001/8001 and the Sony 5200ES.... looking for something that will just WORK!

There are just two theories for successfully quarreling with a woman -- neither one works!

Yeah I know - most annoying.

Having said that, the Yamaha is an absolute champ - really performs well with all my sources (and I was replacing a very good NAD receiver). Its HDMI implementation I believe is very well done - I have had no problems whatsoever....

-g.

One last note - if you buy the 1700/HTR-6090, be sure to make sure your firmware is up to date - Yamaha already has a fix for a little glitch they had with audio dropout. You can download the firmware from their website, burn a disc and easily apply it.

Very odd you have to set optical settings, even when using HDMI PCM!!!

Toshiba needs to get it together. I own the HD-A1 so I hope it works like this too...

Any one knows where to get the RS232 Protocol Document? Will be greatly appreciated if some one could point me to the right direction. Thanks in advance.

I believe I discovered where the internet radio database comes from by monitoring my network. The receiver hits rs2.radiosetup.com, which is associated with vtuner.

Edit: Looks like someone already mentioned that in this thread. Well, I verified it, anyway

Thanks weels that does shed some light. How ever I do not have the Receive Manger software. Do not even know where to get it. Do you know where I can get it. I was actually planning on writing my own software to control the receiver. If some one has written some software would be kind enough to share some code?

Thanks in advance.

QUESTION:

01. When playing Resistance Fall of Man (PS3 game) it is in 7.1 ... actual 7.1 and my reciever (the 1700) plays this wonderfully, but just wondering something.. the little icons that display what speakers are being used... R, C, L and so on.... when 7.1 is in full use it will show 6 icons... the middle bottom one is SB.... so im guessing depending on what you have it set up for in the menus (in my case the extra 2 speakers for 7.1 set ups) it will show that one icon to show you its 6.1 and 7.1?

Its a little confusing I know but I cant think of a better way to ask it. Im sure the reciever is gettgin 7.1 channels because when Im playing I can hear individual sounds from each thing, like I can blow something up and turn around and around it pans from each speaker nicely...

So am I correct?

02. Also when playing 5.1 channel movies (pretty much all of them) the correct thing to do for 7.1 set ups is to have it set to MPCM+Movie PLXX... right? It sounds right, it adds sound into the back 2 speakers nicely. Just wondering.. thanks, I love this reciever.

03. somewhat of a side note.... but it applies, I have a HD-XA2 HD DVD player and the 1700, I have it set to PCM for both optical and HDMI.. should I change it?

I support High Definition Content regardless of color!

Seems like quite a few folks are having a hard time finding the Receiver Manager software, although a simple search of this thread will find it.

However, here you go:

RXV2700 Receiver Manager software V1.00

RXV2700 Receiver Manager manual

If you want to go wireless on this, read jgyenese's invaluable tutorial .

Kudos to you jgyenese for that... I'm sure this saved me from much frustration in setting up my wireless connection to my 2700 using Receiver Manager!

Also, if you go wireless, you will need Grid Connect's NET232-DCE Adapter.

I hope this helps... controlling the 2700 remotely with Receiver Manager is a wonderful thing!

edit:
FYI, The Receiver Manager software downloads as a simple executable (448KB zip file) which does not need to be "installed" per se on your PC. After un-zipping it you can run it directly. Also, it is not necessary to have any connectivity to the RX-V2700 in order to run this software to play with it. So download it and play with it and see the potential this offers to control the 2700!

Thanks a lot Wirelezz. This should be a sticky some where. Now I can move on with my quest. Now on to different question for any one who might know. If I use SP1 and SP2 for Zone 2 and 3, can use an external amp connected to PRE OUT to output SB channels? The documentation make think I can not. I am waiting for my external AMP to try this configuration.

I read in several threads where peopel say you should set the HD XA2's optical output to bitstream EVEN you are using HDMI only. According to them, that would solve the low audio level problem. Not sure about the low LFE problem though. I will be receiving a HD A2 later today so I will see what will happen. I returned the XA2 due to the low LFE issue but then I was convinced that it's the receiver's problem.

FYI guys,

JR.com has a nice deal on the 1700/HTR-6090 going right now.

$699 with an OFFICIAL Yamaha warranty. Unlike a lot of places online, they are authorized by Yamaha.

Mine should be here next week.

Absolutely make sure you change the optical out to bitstream, and HDMI to Auto if you intend using HDMI for audio transport, or you WILL get soft audio.

I have a 1700 and a 5.1 surround setup. No sub right now on Pre-order. Should the movie be on Pro-Logic in the receiver? It just seems like the rear surrounds arent that loud and producing the right sound. When i hit the Surround decode button it seems to get better. But i thought that was just for 2 channel sources.

How do i get the right sound from the rears. I am using my HTIB receiver to play the movies for now. The HTIB is hooked to the Yamaha via HDMI.

When the 2700 says that it scales up to 1080i/720p, does that mean that standard def channels are produced in 720p or 1080i?

Yeah the store price is $1,499 and i told them that butterfly photo is selling it for $998. It's funny .. 'cause i didnt really know that bestbuy will adjust their price for a non-authorized online dealer.

The profits the regular sellers of this kind of equipment are making are bordering on obscene.

Did you ask them over the phone, or stopped in with a printout from butterfly?

I called my local magnolia and they told me they won't match online prices and they had it for $1550. I guess I won't be getting it there.

I went to the store, mentioned the deal to them and they probably asked for an approval from their manager before finally giving me this quote. I will pick up this receiver today and see if this is a real deal or not.

I am still amazed at that Magnolia/2700 deal.

You realize you have made my cry. I could have spent those saved $100's at the adult entertainment and liquor establishment I have been known to visit. Those poor dancers.

USD $990?? At Best Buy?? With a full warranty? It's not a rebranded Goldstar??

I am too distraught to continue with this thread...
