So does this receiver work with the "TrueHD" soundtracks 7.1 of HD-DVD players? If so, how do you have it hooked up and is it possible to get "TrueHD" sound out of a xbox 360 HD-DVD player which I own? Sorry, I don't know much about it but I'm looking to either buy this or one of the Denon HDMI receivers to hook to the following:

SA 8300HD Cable Box via HDMI
Samsung HD850 DVD player via HDMI
Xbox 360 w/ HD-DVD player via VGA/component
Nintendo Wii via component
Xbox via component

Which I'm hoping will be hooked up to a HDMI blade in a Panasonic TH-50PH9UK.

Thanks for the help,
Kasey

I am planning a home theater setup that will use a stand-alone video processor for video switching and scaling/deinterlacing.

I am, however, considering an HDMI 1.1 receiver for the possiblility of playing DVD-Audio discs over HDMI.

Question1: When feeding the 604 DVD-A over HDMI, can bass management be applied to the signals?

Question2: Is there any issue with 480i pass-thru over HDMI?

This reciever only does 5.1 through HDMI though, right? Is there a list on this forum of receivers that do 7.1 through HDMI?

For the price this seems like a great deal and will hold me over until the new receivers come out, but it has been so long since I purchased a receiver that this HDMI stuff has me confused.

I just want to get the PCM and True HD sound from my BD and HD DVD players.

Does 674 upscale analog sources to 720p/1080i? Can you change the upconversion, i.e. adjust to 480p, 720p or 1080i.

What is the next higher model to 674 that has more power but keep the video upconversion features of 674?

Thanks.

ok I have a question. We just ordered the Panasonic 600U 50'' plasma tv. I am about to order the Toshiba sd-6980 divx hdmi dvd player.

Now if I have a dvd upconverted to 720p in that Toshiba player and sent to the Onkyo via hdmi then passthrough to the plasma tv will the signal still stay as the upconverted 720p in the tv? The Onkyo 604 says that it does not upconvert hdmi. So will the signal be down converted back to 480p or w/e dvd's are or will it stay 720p because it was upconverted in the dvd player in the first place?

No. It just takes the signal from an analog or component connection and passes it through the HDMI to your display. It does not alter the original resolution of the data. I believe the data passed is converted in some way, but the resolution will stay the same. The upscaling/upconverting verbiage described, regarding this unit, only refers to the analog or component data being converted in a manner that it will be properly passed to the display via HDMI. Some of the guys in this thread with more skillz may be able to elaborate.

Well everything arrived and everthing works! Did a test install and it sounds great!

I am going to pay for the Plasma mount and the in the wall speakers. (Crawl spaces here in NC)

Really lkie the Nanostats... Perfect for my open room @ 499 @ Vanns I think this was a great deal.

The SR674 is such a a huge step-up from my Denon prologic. All my HDMI connects are switching with no issues (so far) Very pleased with the investment.

Samsung 5053 50"
Onkyo TX-SR674
Mirage Nanosat system
Oppo 970
SA 5300HD

Yes with a HD-DVD player like a Toshiba HD-A1 which has 6 analog audio jacks which connect to the 6/8 analog audio jacks on the 674. This is the same type of connect used for DVD-Audio and SACD. Another option with the Toshiba HD-A1/HD-A2 is sending the True HD over HDMI. The Xbox drive does not support either of these since it does not have HDMI or analog jacks. I have read that True HD does work with the Xbox drive but it is down grades it to a DD signal.

I have been following this thread trying to find a few answers to the following questions.

1. Does this receiver pass 1080p signals via HDMI
2. Will this receiver pass 1080p via component input to 1080p HDMI output.
3. Will this receiver pass 1080p via component output to 1080p component output.
4. What is the max resolution it will convert a 720p or 1080i HDMI input through the HDMI output.

PS I am from england and the onkyo reps here tell me it can do questions 1-3 although i am a bit dubious your help would be appreciated.

1. Yes
2. No. It does not have enough bandwidth to pass 1080p over component video. It can pass 720p.
3. No. Not enough component video bandwidth. It is rated 5hz-50Mhz, so it will be able to handle 720p, but not 1080p over component video.
4. HDMI upconversion is not same as upscaling, so whatever the limitation of source connection is will be passed thru HDMI output. It does deinterlace 480i to 480p though.

Yeah, Onkyo told me it would pass 1080p compponent through hdmi too....seems like some false marketing.

It takes a bandwidth of 37-38Mhz for 720p and it will be in the range of 62-63Mhz for 1080p. Now if Onkyo SR674 has a published specification of 5Hz-50Mhz, I don't see how it can support 1080p over component video.

I beleive u..but i dont think the common consumer would know that, thats where i think onkyo is being misleading.

Many thanks for the quick reply
The main reason i am after 1080p component conversion through HDMI is to run my XBOX 360 to my sharp 42" LCD it will only support 1080p via the HDMI port.
Do you think i should go for it anyway in the hope MS eventually release an HDMI cable allowing 1080p at least i will have 1080p switching capabilities.

An alternative can be directly connecting Xbox360 to the TV (if it supports 1080p over component video) for video and use receiver for audio only from xbox360.

I know Denon AVRs have 100Mhz component video bandwidth and they have enough bandwidth to support 1080p over component video. AVR-887 is the cheapest (current model) Denon with HDMI.

It seems it can't output upconverted 1080p (from component video) thru HDMI. Here is what owner's manual says (page# 18)

Quote:

Signal up-converted to HDMI are output to the HDMI monitor with the resolution at which they are input. Note that resolutions of 1080p are not handled.

Note that it is capable of 1080p HDMI switching and also has enough bandwidth to support 1080p over component video.

i'm looking for advice on whether to get a 604 or 674.

here's what i'm trying to accomplish...

Hook up a LOT of sources:
Digital Cable Box (component or HDMI)
PS3 (component or HDMI)
PC (DVI... I'm assuming I'll need to grab a DVI-->HDMI cable)
DVD player (component)
Gamecube (s-video)
Xbox (s-video)
XM Radio (just a digital audio cable; 3.5mm I believe?)

My question is if I run everything to the receiver, is there a way I can get ALL of it to display on my TV if I just run a single HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV? Would either the 604 or 674 do this? Do they both do it? Does one of them "do it better"?

Thanks...

Guys, I wanted to check in with regards to the Onkyo 674 receiver.

As an owner, I wanted to report that I found no 10db boost issue using my PS3 as a Blu-ray player. I felt plenty of rumble from my HSU Subwoofer, and the volume knob on the back of the sub was @ 12-o'clock.

However, after hooking up my new Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player (via HDMI) this afternoon and playing the Mission Impossible 3 HD-DVD, I immediately noticed the LFE level was severely low (especially for a title as explosive as MI:3 is). So I immediately raised the Subwoofer level on the Onkyo speaker setup to +10db and now everything is fine.

So to recap:

The Onkyo 674 has no apparent 10db boost issue with Sony's PS3 as a Blu-ray player.

However, using Toshiba's new HD-A2 player, you have to raise the Subwoofer channel +10db in order to receive normal LFE listening levels.

I recently purchased the 674 to replace a Pioneer and am very happy with the unit. Regarding the remote control, I was able to get it to operate my Samsung VCR, HP plasms (using Phillips codes), and my Scientific Atlanta HD-tv cable box. I have a Denon 1730 DVD player and there was no code listed for Denon DVDs, although there was a code for Denon CD players (tried that). Does anyone have a Denon DVD mated to the Onkyo and, if so, were you able to get the Onkyo remote to operate it? Or am I just out of luck? Thanks

Ambient Noise ! I have had the 674 for about 4 days and keep trying to use the mic for the auto speaker config. i have double checked all conections and for some reason it keeps saying ambient noise is too high. There is no sound in the room at all so i dont know why it keeps saying that. I am running a 5.1 system.

Onkyo TX-SR674

Center - Polk Audio CS-245

Fronts - PARADIGM monitor 9's

Rears - Yamaha 6-1/2" 3-Way In-Wall Speakers

Sub - klipsh Synergy Sub-12

If i can not use the auto setup how should i config this system. This is my firt HT so i want to make sure i am doing this right.

Could it be the loud hiss coming from your speakers? I mean, I don't know what else it could be. It worked fine for me, and I live in New York City. Plenty of outside noises if you know what I mean...

Does anyone know what the "reference master volume level" is for the 674 if there's even any such thing at all?

I agree. PS3 bass output is fine. I won't know about HD-DVD until end of December when I receive my XA2.

Hey guys....I just set up this receiver at a friend's connected to a Sony DVP-NS75H thru its HDMI. While the video is fine, I can't seem to get Dolby Digital off the HDMI. I tried turning it off at the Set up menu and connected a separate optical but I get no sound at all when I choose OPT1 for DVD. Am I missing something here?
