The more I fool with this reciever, the goofier I realize it is. Features galore but between the HDMI and its off and on handshakes, the scaler and its total unpredictly.. good grief you never know what it is doing or if it is going to do it.
Just because it says scaling is on.. don't bet on it. Just because you turned it off, you may still be scaling. The thing could drive you nuts. It is one giant jigsaw puzzle of a switcher.. my goodness you may need months to figure out what it is going to do and when. Plug in an HD-A1 and things gets even weirder and buggier if that is possible.
The potential is there.. if I can get passed my lack of BTB on the Tosh.. it looks spectacular when scaled by the elite. Getting the Tosh to go in a 480 rez through HDMI when the scaler is on that is a trick... don't how I get it to do it the one time out ten I have tried. I might as well get myself a rubber chicken and do raindances aroud the two of them, probably just as effective.
Perhaps this is an EDID thing
If you have been outputing through HDMI to your TV, then trying to run the component out port is probably not going to work too well. Mine has worked once or twice but I am still trying to figure that one out.
HDMI and HDCP are just a complete pain.I will report back if I crack that code, and yes I know that you can't run 1080i out of the Tosh, through component out. Maybe I am missing something here but with all the darned switching this receiver has, it is darned amazing that you can't specify your video out, let alone video out by input. How crazy is that?
If HDMI would handshake and sync right up, specifying your output port would not be such a problem. But watching the screen flash on an off for what seems like forever every time you switch inputs, change the scaler setting, or change resolutions gets more than a little bit annoying.
The classic is the one where you have sync at some rez lets say a 480 source with the scaler set to 1080i, then you decide to turn the scaler to off or to a 480p setting lets say, and all goes black. Yes, you can usually get sync back if you turn the scaler back to 1080i. But if you want it to display it at 480P, and if going to Pure Direct first before the scaling change does not work, you may have to power the receiver and the input device off then on several times. The next time you try to make that rez switch, the same sequence with the scaler works fine. Totally exasperating!! I don't understand why there is not an OSD for AV parmeters. No back lighting on the control either. Talk about fumbling around in the dark.
