Hey all,

Just bought a new MPS-1 which will be delivered on Monday. Question, what type of cable do I need for the trigger switch? It will be hooked into a Pioneer Elite 84.

THanks,
M1

I don't use the trigger feature, I just turn the amp on when I want to use it.

FWIW, I have the LMC/LPA combo and the trigger cable was packaged with the processor not the amp. As scpanel said they are pretty simple to make.

Last night I had an interesting situation occur, see below:

I'm going to recheck my wiring today to make sure I don't have a strand or something touching, which I highly doubt. Last night I had a bunch of friends over and we watched to movie "The Marine". At some time during the movie the left amp shut down because after it was over I noticed the blue light turned red for that channel.

I was sitting clear over to the right side of the room in front of the right m80, so I didn't notice the left channel missing until I looked over at the amp.

Sirquack - Did you find anything? Tried replacing the pre-out cables? Verified everything is powered from the same AC circuit?
My thought was 1.2V pre-out seems low. I could see pre-amp clipping at those high volume levels which would provide a flat almost DC votage going into the AMP, can't be good for a speaker and thus protective measures within the Amplifier shutting down if this condition existed. Not sure what level the Denon pre-out might clip at or how sensitive the Emotiva would be to such a condition. I'm no engineer and only suggest this as a possibility in theory. The hole in this theory is you would expect the sound quality to suffer greatly and you would take action before the AMP had to shutdown? I am curious, hopefully someone with a technical background in audio can help you get to the bottom of this.

I'm still researching, it is funny that TCR is having the same problem with his Denon combined with 4 ohm speakers. I am far from any engineer or electrical guru as well. I plan to send Lonnie at Emotiva a quick email to have him respond to some of the things mentioned in the audioholics review.

It appears Audioholics also had some issues at first with the protective circuits shutting down premature, however, Emotiva fixed the issue. That review was done last year, so I assume any new models after that point would have been also fixed. I purchased mine in January, 2007. Here is the quote...

" Later on the bench I discovered that the MPS-1 was engaging its soft clipping circuit at around 37-38Vrms into 8 ohm loads and while driving 4 ohm loads the MPS-1 delivered about 31Vrms into 4 ohm load unclipped (note the RBH T-2 System has 4 ohms impedance). However, as I increased the signal level just below clipping, I was able to achieve 33Vrms at 1kHz but the amp shut off when frequency was brought down below 60Hz. It was apparent the sensitivity of the soft clipping circuit / limiter needed some tweaking. I informed Emotiva of my findings and they quickly resolved this issue, sent me a new sample and I didn't observe this problem thereafter"

Another thing they mentioned was different findings on output before clipping...

"I was able to achieve a maximum unclipped power of 175wpc into 8 ohms with Vin=1.65V Vout=37.39V unbalanced and about 255wpc into a 4 ohm load with Vin = 1.42V and Vout = 32V. Once I exceeded these measurements, the clamping circuit kicked in rounding off the signal and dramatically increasing distortion. Based on this, I would rate this amp to be a 175wpc into 8 ohms and 270wpc into 4 ohm, not 200wpc / 300wpc 8/4 ohm respectively like Emotiva rated in their literature."

It just sounds like modules of the MPS are not up to the 300 watt task. Maybe this is a separate module vs large toroids issue.

You'll be fine as long as you are not trying to ruin your hearing.

I'll be honest, I was about to plunk down for a MPS until reading these last few posts. My pre-pro is my Denon 3806. I now need to hear some better answers from Emotiva.

This is the cable you want from Radio Shack. The MPS1 doesn't use a 1/8" plug, only bare wire. I hooked mine up with this over the weekend and it works great. Most Radio Shacks have this cable in stock.

By the way, I had thought the center wire was positive but it turned out to be the opposite. As per Emotiva, just try both and see what works. No harm done while testing.

Also, and maybe I should know this, you have to push the front power button once you hook everything up. This puts it in standby mode, which is how it will stay from then on. Be sure to also flip the toggle switch on the back to trigger mode.

As I posted earlier in this thread, Lonnie from Emotiva told me personally that the LPA-1 needs 1.5v from the pre-outs to achive full power. I would think the MPS-1 would be similar if not the same. If the Denon's truely only put out 1.2v, I find that hard to believe that is what is causing the amp to shut down, IMHO. We are talking about a small difference here, 1.2 to 1.5v.

Gov, your right. I'm working with Lonnie right now. He is thinking the Bias adjustment on the amps I have may be a little off calibration from standard, and prematurely shutting down the amps. He is sending me two today that he personally QA'd to replace the two I have...

Their customer service is starting to remind me of Axiom, top notch. Another plus is the people your talking to are the people that actually design their amps.

Yes, as far as my experiences with Emotiva is on-par with Ascend Acoustics. Excellent customer service! I am a proud owner of both!

I am getting ready on father's day of buy a pre/pro to update my 3 year old 5 channel yamaha that came with a HTIB. My room is 16x11x8 ft. My speakers are the Athena point 5 and my sub is a SVS PB-10-ISD. The Ultra series at $899 is a perfect price point and my preference.
My Listening habits are 60/40 Movies an HDTV / Music via my Macbook optical output and XM radio via Directv and starting to dabble in SACD's.
So here are my Questions:
1. Do they come with cables to connect the processor and the amp.
2. Are my speakers worthy for this set-up or will the power be overkill.
3. Is anyone using a HD-DVD player or Blu-Ray player though the analog outs.
4. Can I use just 5 speakers instead of 7 and will is matrix down DTS-ES and DD EX to 5 speakers.
5. I know this is a dumb question but am I going to be blown away with this upgrade. I know it is my ears but how much improvement should I hear.

Also is anyone using there existing receiver and paring it with the LPA-1. The reason I ask is because I would like my next receiver to accept LPCM over HDMI if I get a ps3 for blu-ray. Or should be patient and wait for the LMA-2 when ever it comes out which if anyone has heard a date that would be nice. I would use my existing Yamaha but it does not have analog out to connect to the amp or HDMI in or out. Thanks

It has a 12V trigger cable for auto on/off but no cables for connecting pre amp outs to power amp

The power will be fine and will come in handy when/if you upgrade speakers

3. Is anyone using a HD-DVD player or Blu-Ray player though the analog outs.
No experience using these inputs

4. Can I use just 5 speakers instead of 7 and will is matrix down DTS-ES and DD EX to 5 speakers.
Yes

5. I know this is a dumb question but am I going to be blown away with this upgrade. I know it is my ears but how much improvement should I hear.
I believe you will as I went from a Pioneer VSX56txi elite receiver and the improvement blew me away.

I am using my Pioneer 1014 as a preamp with the LPA-1 and seems to be a good match, no problems.

Gov,

Can you hear a significant difference between the Pioneer 1014 amp and the Emotiva amp? I was looking at using a 1016 as a pre-amp with LPA-1 or IPS-1.

What area is the improvement?

What speakers do you have and how big is your room?

Thanks.

I have an Ascend Acoustic 5 speaker set up. I use a Mirage S12 powered sub. I run the speakers "small". My room is about 2200 cubic feet, but open to a kitchen which is about 1800 cubic feet. As far as improvements go, everything under 90db I would say the Pioneer's amp can keep up with. Anything over that, the LPA-1 can reproduce with less strain. Plus, since I like to play at loud volumes, the LPA-1 is good piece of mind. So if you have very efficient 8 ohm speakers and play at lower volumes, don't bother adding any amp. But, if you have anything less and like loud volumes, an amp is a great addition that you will benefit from.

I'm not sure if this should be posted in another forum but I just got the LPA-1 and was wondering if anone knew of any good component racks that will fit this monster at a reasonable price.

The LMC-1's HDMI switching is via an external box - there is no OSD and no video transcoding to HDMI.

just do a search (yahoo or google) for Denon DN-A7100, you'll get a number of listings (dealers).

But will Denon give you a 40% off deal on their next pro?
I just got my LMC-1/LPA-1 combo and set up was a real breeze. Only downside now is that I have not had a chance to really hear it yet as I have been busy with school/work/family. Hope to post some thoughts once the weekend is out.

HDMI v1.1...don't most "new" receivers/pre/pros come with 1.2 now? Not to mention most coming out later this year, at a similar price point (some slightly above), will be v1.3 HDMI. Not that everyone, or anyone NEEDS 1.3. I just thought 1.2 was pretty much standard with most at that price point for right now.

EDIT: Oh and lets not forget, like already mentioned, the 40% off on the next gen from Emotiva. I buy and LMC now, and get a next gen higher end model, and its like I got the LMC for free!
