I always thought Denon equipment was great and it still is but they're pricing themselves out of the market. HT market is very saturated and this new line of receivers seem to be priced even higher than the already overpriced previous one. I remember when an $1800 receiver seemed outrageous, Denon AVR-3600, my second Denon BTW. It makes the new Onkyos seem like a bargain, especially when you compare the TX-NR905 to the 4308. Good riddance Denon.

Frankly at the rate that wireless standards change, why saddle the 4308 with already outdated standard? Why not "N" instead of "G" if you're going that route.

I agree with Oscar and Schwok.

$2500 is too much.

When did Best Buy start carrying Denon? I haven't seen it in Dayton Ohio?

Its not just a hobby, its a 401K reduction plan.

Yes, the upcoming Denon receivers are priced a few hundred dollars higher than what I would have expected. The new Onkyo receivers certainly seem like a better deal, at least on paper. Unfortunately I REALLY don't like the way the Onkyo receivers look. The units and their displays just look ugly. What were they thinking? I have an Onkyo SP1000 player which has a very nice design; why did they screw up so badly on the receivers? It's hardly the most important thing, but annoying nonetheless for expensive equipments like this.

By the way, I get the impression that the Denon 4308CI doesn't even have a toroidal power supply, while the less expensive Onkyo 905 has it. The Denon 5308CI will have a toroidal power supply, but I wouldn't be surprised if Denon prices that one at $5000.

Any other upcoming receivers that look better than the Onkyo ones, and have similar features?

G is more than fast enough even for lossless FLAC, so N won't buy you anything unless you have multiple devices hogging the wireless bandwidth at the same time.

Best Buy stores which have a Magnolia store carry Denon.

I've always loved Denon receivers but, ..... Is Denon starting to look like Bose these days?

Say hello to my new friends. Onkyo, HK and Yamaha.

I spoke to a Magnolia employee this evening and he told me the same thing. My next receiver will be either the 3808CI or the Pioneer Elite 94TX. Can't wait for reviews / user impressions!

I made a similar post to this one over in the 4306 thread, sorry if that is against rules...

I have been looking at the new 3808 and 4308 (mainly the 3808) but now thinking that there might not be that big of a difference from the 4306. Since HDMI 1.3 isn't that big of a deal just yet the 4306 might do the trick, though I wish it had 4 HDMI in like the new ones.

Anyone here familiar with the 4306 and 3808 that might be able to tell me what I might be missing out on? I will be connecting a dvd2930, ps3, Xbox elite and a Tivo s3. Most likely the 2930 will go directly to the TV and will use DL3 for sound.

Thanks

Does anyone know yet if the 4308 will allow for different x-over points for each speaker, or just a global x-over point?

I love this stuff!

you only really need hdmi 1.1, unless you want to play SACD.

I thought the denon amps could already do that (ie 3806)?? Can't they?

I hate to post slightly OT, but does anyone have any info on the promised 2007 Denon Pre-Amp? -- is there an AVSF thread on this? I believe I've read something about it somewhere (maybe in this thread), but can't quite remember where. I did see the Audioholics video of the interview with the Denon reps (quasi-CES2007) regarding the anticipated 2007 Denon new releases, which included the prepro and matching 10-ch amp. But I haven't heard much tell of it since.

As for me, I believe my new 2007 base system will come from the "Denon AVR-3808ci receiver vs. Onkyo TX-SR875 receiver vs. Integra DTC-9.8 prepro (with which I'm very impressed) w/ a suitable 7-ch amp (perhaps the Emotiva MPS-1?) vs. the Denon prepro w/ a suitable 7-ch amp" group.

Fifteen years ago, I developed a great admiration for the build quality of the Onkyos', which were hardly heard of back then, but never owned one. When the Integra line came out it peeked my interest, and when the Integra Research line came out, it was the component set I wanted to own. However, the higher-end, be it Integra, Lexicon, etc., never did seem to keep up with the new tech quite enough for my tastes to make me "pull the trigger". I still haven't a clue as to the Onkyo sound quality -- I just think it should sound great with all their attention to quality, etc.

Prolly the wrong thread in which to ask this, but what's the general consensus of the Denon folk regarding the sound quality of Onkyo and its related lines? Don't get me wrong -- right now I own and am quite pleased with my Denon AVR-3805 (for my apartment's purposes); before that I was mainly a "separates" kind of guy. I've admired Denon and its products for quite some time and have been anxiously awaiting the debut of Denon's separates. However, I need to replace my current unit and want to get the most bang-for-my-buck (AV electronics is no longer my only concern -- like most everyone else here). Any and all opinions would be very welcome.

-- da Choge in Dallas

BTW, where is that darn site that showcases the new 2007 Denon's?

I wanted to upgrade from a 3801, and was looking at the 4306 last year. One of the features I was interested in was changing of the Display to a custom name. So the "VDP" can be changed to display "Playstation". Anyone know if this will be available in the 3808? We probably only know what has been posted, but it is worth a shot. Thanks.

Unless a Magnolia is dragging their feet on the receievers they have now, then they won't put the new ones out till the /06/07 series are sold. BUT.... if their ontop of their game they will be available very very very very early in August.

For example, output the signal of a DVD player via HDMI output 1, and at the same time output the signal of a PS3 game console via HDMI output 2?

If not, what are the config possibilities for these two outputs?
What is the benefit of having 2 versus only 1 on the 3808 for example?

+ same question for the Onkyo 905.

I stopped by Tweeter today to drop off my Denon DVD-2930 for service and asked the gentleman when they would get the new Denons. He said Tweeter was dropping Denon to focus on Sony, Pioneer, and one other. Said they dropped Denon since it was going to Circuit City.

Next day, I read in the paper that Tweeter has declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy which I think may have more to do with them dropping Denon than CC. Will CC likely carry the 3808?

Since their current "lower end" models like the 1907, 2307CI and the AVR-887 can do this, I can't imagine all newer models not having the functionality.

Tweeter is a rip off thats why they are going bankrupt. And Circuit city might have it but I doubt it, this is a pretty high end reciever for a big box retailer. Your best bet is online or at a specialty home theater store.

Any information on what digital formats the 3808 will be able to play? Will it handle MPEG-4?

I know the 4306 will only do MP3 and a couple of other music files. It will only be worth it to me if it can find and play movie files on my server.

I have created an official 3808CI thread since it will be out in the next month, lets try and shift discussion of the 3808 over there, if someone wants to create an official thread for the 4308 that would be good as well and alow for seperate discussions.

The official 3808CI thread is here:

Last time I checked they had a price matching policy. They dropped Denon about 3 or 6 months ago... I frequently shop the Burlington location and have always found their pricing to be very fair.
