I recently ordered 7.1 speaker package from Ascend and would like recommendations on a mid level AVR. I have read plenty of posts here but I don't know exactly what I need except for 7.1 compatibility. The receiver will be responsible for:

Ascend 7.1 speakers
Samsung DLP (720p)
Oppo 970 DVD
HD Cable Box
HSU sub

I would just like something to adequately power my speakers and provide support for my other components. I am not sure if audio/video "passthrough" is necessary. I don't mind running separate cables if sound quality is equal. I may be misinformed about hdmi but thats the only advantage I see, especially since I don't have a 1080p display. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Also, I know that this isn't the right area, but what accessories would I need for my setup. I am looking at:

Speaker wire- 12, 14, or 16 gage
HDMI Cable(s)- do I need 1 or 2?
Subwoofer Cable
Component Cable?
Optical Cable?
SPL Meter
AVIA Calibration Disc

Is there anything else that I need?

Sorry for the long post and all the questions. I am new to this and trying to set this up properly. Thanks again!
