If you found the part for $250, it is not $150 worth of labor to switch the board. Also, parts typically have a high markup from repair centers. They are likely getting that part for close to half of that price. Depending on where the repair center is and if they sell equipment, maybe you could make a deal. But, depending on the reason for the failure of the board, I would be hesitant to put $400 into a receiver that may have a latent defect or something else that is going on to cause the failure.

It is really not $400, because they are likely already charging you a diagnostic fee, unless it is $400 over that fee. If that is the case, there is no way I would do it, unless I could not afford to purchase something else.

I often wonder if my VSX-91 has HDMI link issues, because every once in a while, I get an HDMI link error. I have several things in the signal chain, so it is really hard to isolate (VSX-91, VP-50 Processor), but if I connect my PJ directly to my 8300HD STB, I have no problems.

I actually had the board fail on my 91 recently too. I checked all of my other components in connected through out, and nothing was wrong.... Maybe a bad batch of boards?

The tech quoted me $400 to repair it, I already paid a $50 service fee. Does anyone have an old 91 laying around that does not work or any ideas where to find one? If I find a part would it be easy to replace myself?

I dont know if the 1020 will be enough for my system. What do you guys think?

Current Setup:
Triad InRoom Gold LCR (4Ohms)
Ascend 340 Sides
Ascend 170 Rears
SVS 20-39

Room is approx. 2600

I have been looking at the SC05/SC07 and SC25....maybe even the VSX23

Any suggestions?

I don't think the Pioneer's are rated for 4 Ohm. At least my VSX-91 is not. So, it really depends on how loud you listen to your movies.

I can tell you that my brother-in-law has a full Triad in-wall system and it handles the 4 Ohm Load well, but he does not listen at extreme volumes.

miata -- Sorry that this is almost a month late, but this is in regard to your problem with getting analog audio out of your BDP-83. I believe that you have to set the BDP-83 to output the audio out of it's analog outputs, otherwise it will only send the audio to the HDMI output. Check your Oppo BDP-83 manual to be sure.

He uses the VSX-91. I set it up using the Pioneer Cal SW.

He has Silver 6/LCR up front and InCeiling Silver/8 Omni. He uses the Triad Gold Sub with external amp (enclosed in a closet next to the listening area with a return vent cut in the wall). It is really a very stealthy setup that sounds great (a requirement from his wife). I had configured his system for an SVS sub, but the dealer gave such a great deal on the Gold sub (to keep it as a package) that he could not pass it up.

what receiver would you suggest to get then? the 1020/1120 or maybe step up to the Elites again? The 91 had no problem with the speakers either, just not sure if I should get like the VSX23 or step up to the new IceAmps and get the SC 05/25

I have a direct TV HD satellite hooked to my pioneer elite receiver. My 1 year old daughter has recently found remotes to be fascinating and loves to push buttons. BAD IDEA! She did something I can't figure out. With some tv channels the sound goes in and out while the receiver trys to switch digital to analog. Digital is ok, analog goes out. Other channels have no sound at all. I tried switching the signal select feature from digital to auto with no luck. Running out of troubleshooting ideas? Got any thoughts? Thanks, Outsmarted by a 1 year old!

Hi,
I just hooked up the new Oppo 93 to my Pioneer VSX-92 receiver and it keeps shutting down the receiver. I've been on the Oppo thread and someone recommended I give this thread a try, which I used back when I first got my Pio. Any thoughts as to why the receiver keeps powering down. i haven't changed any settings that I always used with both my Pio BDP-51 and Panasonic BD-30 Blu-ray players.

Vsx-90txh no update available

vsx-91txh/vsx-9120txh old 1.006 new 1.012

vsx-9130txh old 1.004 new n/a

vsx-9140txh old 1.052 new n/a

vsx-92txh & 94txh old ? New 1.005

Go to Pioneer Canada or USA website. Find out which is your closest repair depot. You need to have your original receipt or ask Pioneer to send you an authorization letter to get your receiver updated at that facility. Pioneer will pay for the firmware update even if it is out of warranty.Take a copy of your receipt or letter and take it or send it to that facility. It should be done hassle free.

Firmware above is how Pioneer lists them for the full version file update.
Add to the info if you have any.

I have a 92, every so often I get a small "pop" through my speakers, it originally was just one of the rears, but now I get it at different times through the left and right rear speaker. I thought it might be wiring, but when I upgraded my speakers, I used new wire, and the issue persists. Banana plugs on both ends, high quality copper wire. I am extremely sensitive to sounds, so this definitely is a new phenomenon, and though my end result is a new receiver, I would like to know why this is happening so I can potentially sell this receiver for more than just parts.

Thanks!

Is the pop only during DTS-HD movies. If you're not into blu-rays and haven't had the firmware updated then you still have the DTS bomb but just don't know it yet because you don't use DTS-HD.

"Out of the blue" my VSX-94TXH is not decoding DTS-MA audio on the new
"Citizen Kane" blu-ray. It decodes the new "Star Wars" DTS-MA audio.

Is this a firmware issue?

Is this a firmware issue?

it could be what firmware are you running?

To check your firmware do the following.

1) Turn the volume ALL the way down until you see "---" (very important)
2) Flip down the front panel
3) Turn off the receiver
4) Hold the ENTER/SELECT button and the MULTI/ZONE "on/off" button at the same time.
5) Use the down arrow below the SELECT button to scroll through the version info

Another victim with audio issue.
I have a pio vsx 92txh receiver and awhile back i came across this dts-hd pop i had with salt. It was on chapter 7 master volume -25 and ever since my unit is either not decoding right or it may be my speakers.

When i play a blu ray using bitstream-hd the receiver been playing at "Loud volumes" and i have to turn down my master volume way down to -45.
I have reset my receiver many times and re-calibrated my speakers many times with auto mcacc the levels i adjusted to for speakers are 73 db on my spl meter that i use and also use pink test tones on the receiver. I haven't took my unit in for firmware update yet but i did solve my issue for short term is to use pcm and the sound levels are at normal. Did that dts-hd pop issue ruin my speakers?. I don't hear any distortion from them at all,or is it the chip that causing high volume levels?. I know this is a old thread and i though id post this to share.

I have had the pop several times and my speakers appear to be okay. I know this when I play non blu ray disks and the surround sound appears great

On another note this popping has got me wary that I may have been lucky so far. I called Pioneer for authorizations to get my 91 and 94 upgraded. The good news they gave me the authorization right away via e-mail. The bad news was taking both receivers from Jersey to the nearest authorized service center that Pioneer deemed the only service center capable of doing the firmware upgrade which was in Queens NY. After a 4 hour round trip, I now have to wait 2 weeks for the upgrade and then do the 4 hour round trip again.

C'mon Pioneer there's got to be a better way! I guess I could've shipped it at my expense but I didn't trust the mail to get it to and fro without damaging it!

I have a VSX-90TXV and it continues to do me proud. It fills my room with great sound and drives my speakers beautifully. Now, I've just gotten myself a 3D TV and I'd wonder what I would need to do in order to upgrade my receiver. The one thing that I have always lacked is any HD sound, but I never thought that I really suffered form it. I also hear that it's not the big upgrade they were making it out to be.

Now, I wonder if I should pony up for a new 3D receiver and if so, which one? I got this one used for about $290 about 3 or 4 years ago. It was a great deal then. It was also the bottom of the line receiver with 110W/channel and it didn't do audio passthrough via HDMI. Now, the lowest grade receiver is only 90W/channel. Should I take that lesser power or should I just keep my current receiver and just route my PS3 directly to the TV for 3D content?

Where's the info online about the firmware update for the VSX-90's series models. Just checked Pioneer's website and I can't find anything about it.

I randomly checked this thread and saw something about issues with DTS HD audio. I actually have an issue with my 91 that crops up once in a while where the front panel indicators all start to flicker and there's no sound at all. I remedy by either powering the unit off and on or stopping the disc and restarting. It only happens with DTS HD.

Otherwise, it works beautifully and I haven't had any other problems in nearly 4 years of ownership. Love it!

Gave up on the 91 after finding out the software loaded on it was a past update and would not solve issue of DTS Bomb. Just retired it and bought a internet upgradable Denon 4311 from AV Science Store......no regrets. -Pete
