Exactly! I'm not jumping into the SACD or DVD-A game until I can get a good universal player with a 5-6 disc carousel that plays ALL optical formats. I'd pay a decent price for that, esp. since having a well made, reliable unit would be more important if it's the main source for both A & V. Unless one format suddenly takes off and leaves the other in the dust (doesn't seem likely very soon), I wouldn't want to be stuck with a player that's specific to a possibly dead format.

I was refering to the attached link.

This bad boy...looks like it can do just about everything. I was wondering if it'll make me breakfast. Although no mention of multichannel SACD, it is firmware upgradable.

Also how is the quality of Apex other products?

I just got back from CES, and the news is buzzing and it is official: Sony's SACD format is going head on with DVD-Audio, in that it will become a multichannel format in April 2001.

In April, Sony releases its first high end SACD Multichannel player, which I believe is a 5 disc changer. MSRP is going to be about $1799. However, a few months later, it will release another player with a MSRP of about $399.

Clearly, the war is waging. And, after having purchased a SACD player, the only credible criticism I've heard is that the format is two channel, not multichannel, like DVD-Audio.

Well . . . looks like we got ourselves a convoy. Or a real honest-to-goodness format war. I'm now betting against DVD-Audio.

I think you are mistaken. There are players coming out with DVD-Audio capability, and SACD two-channel capability. Nothing has yet been announced, I believe, that will handle DVD-Audio and Multi-channel SACD.

Although it's very likely someone will put out such a beast, and soon. I, for one, will probably buy one.

The point of my post is that SACD just went from a niche format to putting DVD-Audio out of business. However, unlike Beta and VHS, and perhaps more like Dolby Digital and DTS, two formats may well survive.

Actually Philips will have the first Multichannel SACD player in early February. The Sony player will follow in April.

Sony/Philips also announced that the 4 DMP Multichannel SACD discs that are now available (they also have Stereo SACD and Red Book Stereo CD tracks), will be joined by 10 more Multichannel SACD discs soon. They are:
* Gaudemaus - Sacred Feast (DMP SACD-09)
* Robert Hohner - Far More Drums (DMP SACD-10)
* Vivino Brothers - Blues Band (DMP SACD-11)
* Bob Mintzer Big Band - Homage to Count Basie (DMP SACD-12)
* Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (Virgin SACDV2001)
* Robert Lockwood Jr - Delta Crossroads (Telarc 63509-SA)
* Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops - Route 66: Nelson Riddle Sound (Telarc
60532-SA)
* Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops - 1812 Overture (Telarc 60541-SA) (New Recording in DSD)
* Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops - Mega Movies (Telarc 60535-SA)
* Jim Hall, Joe Lovano, George Mraz, Lewis Nash - Grand Slam: Live at
Regattabar (Telarc 63485-SA)
* Andrew Litton/Dallas Symphony - Dallas Christmas Gala (Delos SACD 3267)
* Moscow Chamber Orchestra - Shostakovich: Chamber Symphony (Delos SACD
3259)
* Moscow Chamber Orchestra - Vivaldi: The Four Seasons (Delos SACD 3280)
* Jory Vinicour, Harpsichord - Bach: Goldberg Variations (Delos SACD 3279)

Sony Music will be announcing their initial Multichannel SACD titles in the near future. Very interesting.
