First- you guys have an awesome site! More information than I know what to do with here. You are A++ in my book.

Now for some depressing news---

I called JR this morning for the status on my receiver. They said "First week of June.". I mentioned that this was the first whole week of June and asked if they had them or any tracking for them coming in. I was told hopefully by the end of the week or maybe next week.

So basically, it went from a quick blow-off response to a maybe this week or possibly next week one. When I mentioned I could have my AVR now at CC he said "Yeah, but not at this price.".

So- I was wondering, is there any other place that comes close to JR's price that actually knows when they will be getting these things?

Sorry for the rant, but like most, I was told mid-May when I ordered it in April. Thanks for any help and keep up the great work on this site. I probably won't post much new stuff because newbie doesn't begin to describe how little I know about the AV world.

I hear ya. I'm waiting for them to ship my pre order too, and I dont want to cancel because i can't find anywhere else that has this price, and that i'll lose my place in line. Anybody know if CC will PM to JR?

This is a bug bear. Could in fact be busted. Hope not. Let me know.

I don't have HDMI input for Game/TV. This is not an elite 360 so it only has component out (which is going into the 605 through component in 1 assigned to Game/TV). Audio is coming through optical 1 which I also have assigned to Game/TV. My HDMI inputs are taken up by 1) PS3 assigned to DVD and 2) Cable Box assigned to Cable/Sat.

Is that the "best"?
Which receivers have this chip inside?

the Reon from Silicon Optix is the mid-tier chip. They have a Realta flagship one and a Geo low-cost one available as well. The Reon seems to be a solid chip used in Blu-Ray players and other source components. If your looking for a video processor, look for a separate component to specialize in VP and use your AVR to process audio. Check the Video Processing form for all the different variations. Of course your jumping into the the 2k-20k product range, but if your truly looking for a video processor, look for one that specializes it vs. one that has split duties of audio processing, video processing, and switching.

As for the "best", you will have to see it in action to truly appreciate what a great audio and video will sound and look like and if it's worth your cash.

Good Luck!

Nevermind.

I just called J&R (twice, because I didn't believe the first guy), and they informed me that my 605 (silver) shipped TODAY. Finally!

They said I will be getting a tracking number later this evening.

I have the same issue as well. The house warming party is next week and I have the speakers sitting in the dust for sometime already, with no receiver. I was promised several times with all different dates too!

Just called J&R to follow up on my 4-20 preorder for the black 605. Should be "soon". Can switch to silver 605 for immediate shipment and at the same preorder price. Also, both silver and black 805's are in stock. Decisions, decisions!

I guess I can't expect 1080p output with my 1990 nintendo. sigh* I'm also waiting for tracing info from jr. They're so slow, but for 100$ off the suggested retail, can't really ask for anything else. Now all I need is to see the new 68's from B&W.

OK,
I've been through this whole forum and most of the other 605 forums looking for an answer to a question that nobody seems to have asked yet.
We know by now that as-of-this-writing, Toshiba's XA2 does not send out bitstream THD info through its HDMI output, at least for discs encoded in the Advanced format (most of them) and that it can decode them to PCM internally and output that PCM stream through HDMI. The Onkyo 605 can then amplify and play that PCM stream.
Here's my question: Does the 605 treat a 5.1 PCM stream from its HDMI inputs just like it does its analog 5.1 input (6 RCA jacks), meaning, does it send it through without touching it or does it take the PCM stream coming in through HDMI and apply all the DSP stuff on it, y'know, Delays, Levels, BM, EQ, etc.?
I just bought a 605 (Silver) and hopefully it should be in by Friday. The whole reason i got it was because I'm trying to get away from the BM issues of the XA2. Yeah, I know that the latest firmware has made things better, but I'd still like to make sure.
Thanks,
Raj

I replaced an Integra 7.1 with the 605 and it sounds terrific through my MagnaPlanars. I have a 200w powered sub-woofer, the front Magnapans, a center Paradigm and my rears are homebrew, tuned with a spectrum analyzer...big towers with dual 8" woofers, 3 way custom cross-over, etc.

At this point, I've listened to the opera Barber of Seville, which was on PBS HD the other day and it was exquisite...very good spatial effects as the singers moved about the stage. (And this was DD 2.0 then processed by the 605 to PLII-Movie). Clear, full, clean audio, not excessively bright.

Have also watched a series of HD movies...and of all things, Boston Legal. The audio in Boston Legal was amazing.

The only thing I don't like so far is it runs way too warm for my tastes. I put a laptop cooling fan on top (to pull hot air out the top of the 605) and now it runs nice and cool.

So far I am very pleased. I use a DirecTV HD-DVR (HR20) and an Oppo 971 upconverting DVD player on the two HDMI inputs. My TV is 720p HL-R5667W 56".

I bought it locally at a Stereo store in Ames, IA, where I had purchased two prior Onkyos. I ordered it about two weeks before the end of the month and got a call on May 31, saying come get it.

Will receive 605 from ******* Friday. Had order dated 5/16 from Amazon but they do not have units in stock yet. Awaiting 1.5 firmware for my Toshiba HD-A2 which has handshaking problems with Monoprice HDMI switcher. 605 will eliminate need for switcher now as I now only have 2 HDMI sources to Sony Bravia S HDTV.

Still haven't had my question answer so just wanted to bump it.
Anyone try out the 605 with the PS3 and get PCM 7.1 w/ Blu-Ray or Resistance?
Also I work at CC, We won't price match any online dealer like J&R or Amazon
My best advice for getting a deal would be to find a cheaper price like Brandsmart (Miami Area), BB, Sears, etc... Keep in mind CC has a 30day price guarantee so if you find anything cheaper within that period they'll fix the price.

PCM 5.1 is an improvement over regular 5.1 - I switched back and forth and can tell the PCM 5.1 is processing the signals more independently (at least sounded that way to me)

I've had my 605 for a few days. Good news is HD DVDs (via Toshiba HD-A2) look and sound great. Bad news I cannot get standard DVDs to show the video, if I'm using HDMI for sound. The kicker in my configuration is that I don't have an HDMI input on my TV, so I have to run component video to/from all components. I'm simply using HDMI to get the TrueHD from my HD DVD player. Configuration below:

- HDMI from HD-A2 to SR605 HDMI IN1
- Component video from HD-A2 to SR605
- Component video from SR605 to HDTV, which does not have HDMI input
- HDMI Monitor: NO
- HDMI Input for DVD: IN 1
- Component video for DVD: IN 1
- Digital Input for DVD: HDMI 1

I can get standard DVDs to play, if I hook up an optical sound cable from the DVD player to the receiver and change the Onkyo settings to *not* use any HDMI inputs.

Interestingly, I've found what seems like a glitch in the SR605 firmware: Turning the HDMI Monitoring setting to Yes actually outputs the picture via Component video and turns off the sound for the HDMI input - doesn't seem setting to yes should do either of these things.

Any thoughts on how to set this up so I can watch/hear HD and standard DVDs without having to monkey with the SR605 settings each time?

Thanks,
Fred

I don't know all the ones they got in. I do know he had all 3 sold before they got in the door. (Cyclone Stereo). You should call before you go ... I have no idea what's in stock.

Lemme know how you make out...they seem like good people...I've dealt with them for years and years, primarily because they always had a good stock of Onkyos.
