Firmware updates don't require a dongle or jig if the main firmware (Main Update?) is at 1.01. most were at 1.00 which necessitated one or the other. DSP can be done regardless of firmware version.

Independence Day 2 - Resurgence: Audio drop-outs?

During my first playback of ripped ID2 (DTS-MA) through my TX-SR805, I experienced numerous audio drop-outs. Audio would be lost for 1-5 seconds, during which front panel indicators for audio properties (format and channels) would disappear. No audible artifacts before or after the drop-outs. I later tested a different DTS-MA title (Jurassic World) and it played without flaws. Rip was Handbrake with audio pass-thu + AnyDVD. Playback was PCH VTEN.
Any other TX users experience similar?

PS. I updated firmware last year for "DTS bomb".

I still can't believe I have had my Onkyo 805 after all these years. Recently, I have heard some clicking noises from it and I know there is a common HDMI board issue.....If my unit ever goes out, what do you think of a Marantz 7010 as a replacement? I currently have a complete set of Klipsch Reference speaker, RF 82, RC 62, and 4 RS 52 and a Synergy Sub 12 subwoofer. I have heard Klipsch and Marantz made a good pair.

I was airing out my 805 today. Still sounds as good as the day I bought it. But, my wife was asking about something newer with BT and other up-to-date features. Told her I would have to look at a worthy replacement. I'm also curious what others would recommend whether it be another Onkyo, or another brand. I have a Klipsch Testing Engineer in the family (that's been worth a few good deals) who has told me more than once that he prefers Onkyo or Marantz if you're going the A/V receiver route to drive Klipsch speakers.
I currently have KLF-30s with a KLF-C7 center, and RS62 surrounds.
The 805 has been flawless for music, but is behind the times for video processing. Curious what receivers to look at for the future.

Do crossovers apply to pre-outs as well?

Hello all! I am considering an 805 I saw on sale for $100 as my first receiver, likely powering a set of Athena F2 or some kind of Cerwin Vega mains (Im a big basshead...). Paired with a sub, of course.

My question is whether the pre-out outputs are subject to crossover settings on the 805. I am debating investing in a separate power amp, and I would like to be able to specify crossovers for various speaker setups as I add them to the setup. I understand that I can set a low pass to route all bass frequencies to the subwoofer, which by default will send all the rest of the frequencies to the mains, but if I were to add smaller speakers down the line, by connecting them to the other pre-outs, I may want to specify different crossover ranges for those. Does the 805 allow for such settings?

Yes it does. It's part of how the bass management works for each channel. It doesn't matter if you use the 805 internal amps or use dedicated amplifiers. The crossover selections can be set different for each channel in zone 1.

It can't. ARC was introduced with HDMI 1.4, the TX-SR805 uses HDMI 1.3.

What is ARC exactly, does it improve the audio quality or something?

Adding 5ch amp to my Onkyo 805. No volume control!

My Onkyo 805 has been acting up recently. Last time I turned it on it wouldn't play any sounds, so without digging too deep I just assumed it was maybe fried. My uncle just upgraded a bunch of stuff and gave me his Pioneer Elite SC-07 and Emotiva XPA-5. I used that setup for a little while and thought it didn't sound nearly as good as it did before with just the Onkyo. I would like to use the Emotiva with the Onkyo to see if I like it better. So far after playing with the Pioneer I can't stand how complicated it is compared to the Onkyo.

Anyways I set everything up, used all the preouts and clicked everything on and it was blaring. The volume on the receiver wouldn't work I had to use the volume on my phone (I was airplaying itunes) to get it turned down, but even the lowest volume setting was still too loud. How can I get volume control using an external amp??

I assume you connected the pre-out on the onkyo to the emotiva. Make sure the preout setting is for variable volume and not fixed.

^^ Maybe the setting on that particular HDMI connection to your airplay device is not set correctly. Did you try over-the-air radio or any other connection? If those work then look through the menu settings for that HDMI connection. Next step try it w/o the amp and see if the volume works......

Let us know we can dig further.

It was the newest gen. AppleTV I was using as a source. I went through all the settings on there but nothing to switch between fixed and variable volume. The only thing I've come across as a setting using fixed or variable volume is when using zone2 or zone3. Nothing to do with the preouts.

I did however find a volume setting on my TV for fixed or variable...would that mean worst case scenario I run the AppleTV to my TV and have an HDMI out to the receiver? The volume worked just fine with the Pioneer so I assumed the source wasn't the issue.

I still do not see the chain of issues . Did you try another HDMI port or even listen to over-the-air material to see if the volume works? Also w/o the amp does the volume control work?

Without the amp the volume works yes. I haven't tried another HDMI port yet, I suppose I could but didn't think that could be the issue. And I apologize for my ignorance, but over-the-air material?? Even when I go into speaker settings the white noise is CRANKED at the lowest volume.

I have Onkyo TX-SR875 which sounds fantastic in analog mode, direct mode, pure audio mode but having issue of popping/crackling sound in DSP Modes. Whats cause this popping sound from front channels? another question is if its 40pin Flat cable which run from front display to DAC board cause it? How to remove front panel? I like to change all ribbon cables of Onkyo TX-SR875.

I'm having issues with my 805 shutting off during high dynamic scenes. We don't spend as much time in the HT as we used to but We were up there last week watching Superman (1978) version on Amazon and during a most of the explosion scenes, the Receiver would shut off. Very consistent. Then again last night while watching the new Wonder Woman. I can't remember how long I've owned this thing but it has been flawless from the beginning. I've even had a small PC fan running through the AC outlet on the back since I got it.

Watching TV, sports, TV movies is just fine. Probably because the audio range is fairly narrow.

Should I do a factory reset? I'd really prefer to not set up the AVR again if I don't have to.
