Does any manufacturer make a preamp with HDMI 1.3, Dolby True HD, DTS master audio processing BUT with BALANCED OUTPUTS?

If you can wait a month, the Integra DTC-9.8 should be the first. More info here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=854025

Maybe I missed something but when I just went to the Integra website and they did NOT show that it can process Dolby TrueHD or DTS master audio. I didn't even see HDMI input/outputs on the back either. Those balanced outputs sure looked nice though...

Was it the 9.8? You might have looked at the current pre-pro. As far as I know the 9.8 is not on their site yet. Look at the "Official new Integra reciever" (might not be exact wording) thread. There are pictures of the 9.8 in that tread.

The DTC-9.8 isn't out yet, so it's not on their website (you were looking at the older 9.4 which is about to be replaced by the 9.8). There's a picture of the 9.8's back-panel here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&#post10743635

The HDMI 1.3 inputs (4) and outputs (2) are across the top. It's supposed to be available in late July for about $1600 MSRP.

Right now, they're the only game in town for all the "next gen" features, but I bet they won't be for long.

Well, if you like Onkyo, you'll love Integra. It's Onkyo's higher-end brand aimed at custom installers.

In capabilities, the 9.8 is essentially an Onkyo 905 that substitutes balanced 7.1 outputs in place of the amplifier section, for about the same price. There's a few other differences, such as the 9.8 also adding balanced stereo inputs but not having the network streaming of the 905.

I wasn't even going to using the amps in the 905 anyway. I am going exclusively with large QSC pro amps and I really wanted those balanced outputs to go into my 2 DBX Driverack 260 speaker management systems. I will need them for bi-amping the 3 commercial JBL 3632 cinema arrays I am buying. I will also be using the DBX units to tweak my HUGE IB sub system. This Integra DTC 9.8 is just what the doctor ordered!!!

Very true that the 9.8 will have competing products very soon. But at the $1600.00 price point will remain to be seen. It is great for future pre-pro buyers as maybe other manufacturers will follow suit with pricing close to the 9.8.

But the short answer is 'No'.

There are more than a handful of [op amps] that sound so good that most designers want to be using them as opposed to discreet transistors. Dave Reich, Theta 2009

bland,

Not sure I understand, short answer to what? As in no one else will have a pre-pro in that price range or the 9.8 is a lot of talk?

There currently are no prepros available with the feature set listed by the original poster, was thebland's point. However one that meets all the criteria listed and then some is due to be released soon, at a VERY attractive price, the Integra 9.8

I guess you could interpret it that way. But it would be good to see the specific post he is giving an answer to.

I have been wondering about upgrading my Denon AVP-A1 for some time now (ever since I bought my first DVD player with HDMI). What I don't want to do is to replace my Denon TOA-2 & 3 amps as well otherwise this starts getting expensive.

As I am looking at jumping into the HD format on DVD (via Blu) I wanted something that will support these new formats as well. So for me this product seems to have all the things I need and more (don't need multi-zone or balanced inputs/outputs). But do want TrueHD and DTS-HD capabilities.

Sounds like the availability is not great at the moment though, but in no hurry for now, can also wait to see how the other CE's reposnd to this unit.

If anyone knows of any other solutions I should be looking at then would be glad to hear from you.

Also consider the Onkyo Pro PR-SC885P which is the clone to the Integra DTC-9.8. Mine is due to ship the end of this month from Troxell. See this thread for more info. You can see the balanced outs by clicking on the 2nd picture link within this URL. The rack mounts are removable and the the few users who have the Onkyo are pleased with the overall package.

AFAIK, the Integra 9.8 and Onkyo are the first out of the gates that can do what the OP wants. They are just in limited availability now.

Ouch !!! That is majorly steep. So the Onkyo would be a better option for now. Or even an older PrePro if one exists. As a family man now, my budget is not what it used to be.

The link doesn't seem to work but I did see this on the Onkyo site.

From my understanding, you do NOT need to have TrueHD or DTS-HD in the receiver as this is decoded by the player (and has to be as in some cases the player has to 'mix' different sources i.e. for PIP).

So why is the TrueHD & DTS-Hd needed? I guess for other sources, i.e. Satellite, Cable etc.. ?

My projector is not HDMI 1.3 so maybe for now I can get an older Pre-amp or a receiver with Pre-outs that can cope with the LPCM over HDMI? The projector will be upgraded at some stage in the future though (currently only 720p and will want 1080p when the price is right).

Any suggestions?

Alternatively I can wait a while as for the time being even after I upgrade to Blu-Ray (probably initially via a PS3 then later with a dedicated Blu-ray player or Dual-format player or maybe I should go for the dedicate player sooner but would have to import it as some of my US discs will be region coded).

At the moment, I don't think there are many titles out that I would need this new capability and/or I can live with this limitation for the next 6 months or so. If I end up with a dedicated player with Analogue outs, then I can prolong the life of my current setup. I will however need to buy a HDMI switch as I will have more than one HMDI source.

Hmmm decisions decisions

Any updates to this thread? I'm slightly less concerned about the balanced outputs, but an HDMI 1.3 repeating pre-amp with all the appropriate codecs (and DSD for bonus points) would be great.

In lieu of a pure pre/pro, I've been considering getting the Onkyo SR-TX805 just to use as a pre/pro, but it's such an ugly, bulky piece of kit...

BTW--be wary of the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player. The HDMI port on it does not appear to fully match the HDMI 1.3 standard (which was finalized after the PS3 release), and will not send pure bitstreamed hi-def audio codecs across the wire. It's not currently known if this is a hardware or software limitation.

I was more curious if there were any additional, new products (other than the Integra and the Onkyo) that had been released for doing HDMI repeating in a pre/pro.

Current status is available in the thread in my signature below. I will be updating it shorly to identify balanced vs rca only. Right now, the only ones shipping with balanced outputs and HBR decoders are Onkyo Pro/Integra and Denon.

The issue, IMHO is lack of a DTS-HD Master Audio decoder on the PS3. If it had that, it could send lossless 5.1 LPCM or better.

Note that HDMI 1.3 does not REQUIRE bitstream TrueHD/DTS-HD MA. It's optional.

Onkyo 886 is definitely the value/performance leader and it has Balanced outputs that I love!!
