I've been trying to hold out for a local vendor (Bestbuy has a 36-month no interest deal), but it seems like the 5308ci is too rich for their Magnolia stores...so...the question...is ABT as good as or better than Crutchfields? If so, I'm ordering tonight.

ABT Electronics customer service in my experience is tops compared to Crutchfield who have yet to give me my credit back..

I should have the system on Friday...

Unfortunately I took the last system they had.. they got three today and they all sold out...I was told they should have another shipment in 10 days.. they did not expect to sell all three so quickly...

Congratulations on being the first on the board to own one! Now, we expect a solid review complete with fancy descriptive audio jargon!

so being a n00b to such things, i'm willing to take a crack it, but by no means am i an expert.

initial observations so far -

The Audyssey setup is ver efficient and worked well in my living room. We have about the worst possible setup for a home theatre (vaulted ceilings, odd shaped room, etc.), and it did quite well in balancing it out.

So far i've tested:

1. DTV HD picture, which is excellent as always, but no noticeable improvement.

2. BluRay - Fifth Element (remastered blu ray version) the colors are INCREDIBLE and the sound was marginally better, although it's only recorded in DTS HD 5.1

3. setup GUI is pretty intuitive and works well.

let me know what else you want to test

Thanks for the pointer to ABT yesterday. Looks like I was able to snag one of them. Now I get to wait for the truck.

I also Ordered the AVR-5308CI from my local Dealer (Montréal) to replace my AVR-5800.
I email Denon for a delivery date. The answer was for mid february. I'm not in a rush.

ABT charged my credit card, but now when I check the order status it says the receiver is backordered. Not good. I've cancelled the order and won't deal with them again.

Hi I'm the sales person at ABT that BANDALI purchased the last AVR-5308CI from. I'm very sorry about your experience with ABT. On Monday morning we got 3 5308's in. Right after the first post on here they were sold out. We were not ready for that.

Again I'm very sorry and if you do change your mind and give us another chance for a later purchase I'm sure I can take care of you. You can PM me on here anytime. Thanks.

Without going to the 4308 boards, what did the trick -- taking spaces out of your wireless SSID?

CONGRATS to you guys that received yours! How's the GUI and everything? Does anyone have it running in "9.1" yet?

Code:
Burr-Brown PCM1791A 113dB SNR $ 3.00/ea Yamaha RX-V3800, Denon 3808, 4308 and DVD-2930CI
Burr-Brown PCM1796 123dB SNR $ 6.50/ea Yamaha RX-Z11, Onkyo 805/875/905, Denon 5308 and DVD-3930CI
Burr-Brown PCM1792A 127dB SNR $13.00/ea ?
Burr-Brown PCM1792 132dB SNR $13.65/ea Yamaha RX-Z9, Denon 5805ci and DVD-5910
All are stereo DACs, so four are required per receiver. Prices above are list prices as of 4Q 2006. Current distributor pricing on the 1791A, 1796, 1792A, and 1792 is $2.10, $2.95, $9.95, and $11.75, respectively. Thus, at today's market prices, it would have cost Denon an extra 4x8.8=$35.20 to use Burr-Brown's best prosumer DACs in the 5308.

Prosumer DACs like the PCM1792 didn't offer much practical benefit for CDs and DVDs, but Blu-ray is arguably a different story, where you find an increasing number of titles with 24/48 (i.e. ~144dB SNR) LPCM, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD MA. With such Blu-ray titles, premium DACs should provide a higher-fidelity signal to the amp.

The 1796 in the 5308 still seems to be an improvement over the 1791A used in the 5805ci.

I noticed that the RX-Z11 (11.2) receiver from Yamaha uses the PCM1796 chip.
The next model down however (RX-V3800) uses the PCM1791A chip.

Do you know what other receivers utilize either the DSD1792 or PCM1792 chip that also have dts-ma and TrueHD decoding?

EDIT - fixed list.

A subsequent correction to this table indicated that the 5805/ci uses the PCM1792 (although the table itself is not updated), just like the 5910.

(Don't have an answer for the "other receivers" question.)

Updated to include RX-V3800 from Yamaha (PCM1791A) and Yamaha RX-Z11 (PCM1796)

The odd thing is though that the PCM1792 is a stereo and mono DAC and the 132 dB rating is only for Mono. If it says the DAC's are "per channel" then surely they are set up to be used in Mono mode.

Still, the jump up from the 1791A to the 1796 looks like a good choice for someone interested in DSD to analog conversion as an important feature of any receiver, hence the TX-NR905 is probably the one I'm going to look at.

With the Denon 5308CI specs, they're quite confusing.
It states the HDMI inputs are compatible with 1.1 spec, which must be a misprint as it says Deep Color.
It also states the following:

24-bit/192-kHz DACs Burr-Brown PCM-1791 PCM-1796/ 2 x 8 Channels

So it looks like 12 PCM1796 DAC's, one for each channel?

You're in CA? The BD version has TrueHD 5.1 and PCM, no dts on it.
