To the forum gods, I just sold my Denon 5308ci why i just got a Samsung 65inch 4K,3D tv so i needed the 3d, 4k pass though. So this is what i am up to i do see Denon and Marantz are coming out with new Dolby Atmas Receivers. With the new receivers will i need new speakers. I also see the i can now pick up Denon 4520, and a Marantz 7008 for the same price. I do have a wife she said NO NEW SPEAKERS. So a little help please.

Unless you currently have overhead ceiling speakers, ideally you either want to install 2 or 4 speakers, get Atmos top firing speakers or use add on Atmos modules placed on top of existing speakers or a flat surface nearby. If new speakers are not in your future, the 4520CI would be the better alternative as it is Denon's current flagship 32 bit model mfr'd in Japan, while the SR7008 is a China built 24 bit model.

Okay. So you could add a pair of Def Tech Atmos A60 modules placed on top of your FL/FR speakers for a 7.1.2 setup; however, if not wanting to add more speakers, the 4520CI is likely your best option.

has there ever been any documented information that the Chinese made models( of any brand) were inferior to the ones built in Japan?

or is it a placebo....

Clearly...I know the reason for the move
But just wondered if anyone has any verifiable information on the differences..if any

added to that the falling prices of the unit....that IMO...will continue to do so

Anyone have an issue with the HDMI port going bad? I believe mine has.

I looked at the current line up of denon ..... I think the 5308 still has the edge on amp quality output ... Gonna use my 5308 as a power amp paired through individual speaker inputs with a decent pre amp that has xt32 audyssey sound processing and thereby use the 3d / 4k output as well on that pre amp ... IAM kind of surprised that pre amps with hdmi2.0 and 3d are priced higher than an avr with hdmi 2.0 and 3d ....

The $1000 5308 3D/XT32 upgrade kits have been sold out for awhile, but you may get lucky if you call around various authorized repair facilities and find one if you are interested in going that route.

Any idea if the upgrade includes subeq? I'm just curious, I have the upgrade already.

No, it does not as the 5308CI uses a much more advanced sub configuration setup than the lower models.

Thanks for the reply jd ... Unfortunately I did call all of Denon Superservice centers a few months back and they had no spare kits ... The kits were ordered on case by case basis when they were available and as far as the main stock of the kits at denon ...Denon folks told me that they put the remaining kits on stock 5308 that were remaining and sent them to accessories for less outlet and there were no more kits being manufactured ... So in essence there are no more kits out there Iam outta luck ... But I can still use my 5308 as a power amp ...

Well I finally bit the upgrade bullet for my system ... Got a lg 84ub9800.... Can only use one of the hdmi inputs on TV for either my 3d blu ray or 5308 ... UGHHHHHH!!! .... Other TV inputs keep telling me hdmi is not compatible ... So I searched for a solution and recently saw denon X4000 on clearance pricing ... Went ahead and bought one ...will be delivered this Friday /Thursday ..hoping to use my 5308 as power amp to the new x4000.... I noticed none of the denon amps are hdcp 2.2 compliant so pretty much I figured that there is not much difference in x4000w and x4000 except for atmos but as x4000w wont be able to play the 4k blu Ray coming out in 2015 the atmos is not that important ... Plus everybody is gonna be in the same boat dealing with obsolete amps yet again by next year thanksgiving ... The benefits of the set up will hopefully allow me to enjoy xt32 room correction using the x4000 and the superior sound of avr5308 amp section via individual inputs and finally use the 4k inputs on the tv for hdmi and plug all my devices into the x4000 and not having to plug the 3d blu Ray into TV and disconnect my amp and vice versa .... Also using the iTunes app to control amp will simplify the control of the amp... And I figure using this set up I should be good for next few years ... As the new 4k blu Ray player comes out next year the lg TV is already hdcp 2.2 compliant ... And the audio return hdmi plug on my lg TV would return the audio to x4000 to process the sound or I can buy a dual hdmi output 4k blu Ray player when they come out next year ... Love the sound of my 5308 and hope to keep the beast around for many many years to come .... I hope to get around the audio lag issue by using the x4000 as a processor and the hub of all connections so hopefully won't run into much of an issue there ...
Long live the 5308 ... Even if the hdmi is outdated on it ... It's still one of the best amps out there

I know this is probably just wishful (naive?), thinking but would there be any way Denon might consider doing another upgrade to support the Atmos codecs? Just curious if there might be any insight here as the minutia of Atmos is all still pretty new to me.

AFAIK, not going to happen. Only the new 2014 and newer models will be Atmos capable.

Hello prior Denon 5308 flagship owners and users - do you have thoughts/comments to add to the below thread?

"The official Denon 2016/2017 flagship AVR (x9200w?) wishlist"

Using back panel of x7200W as baseline:
>>Keeping audio and video board basic layouts as is
>>Should help with thermal management and EMI management issues

Here is mark-up of "keeps" and "deletions".
I realize this is debatable, but I truly see in 2016/2017 that a flagship has little need for true "legacy connectors" besides the bare minimum I've kept below.

Giving this result.
Since we are 2 years out, and the layout restrictions to keep the architecture of the x7200W, this seems "doable".....

Thoughts, comments, feedback?

I’m like 99.99999% sure that will not happen!

AVR-5308CI receiver has been offline for a couple years. Just did the firmware update and its hanging with message "DSP1 Firm 24 Minutes Updating". I have done both the up down arrow reset and the standard and TX button reset. Neither made a difference. Using Wired Ethernet directly connect to my modem, also tried another internet source. Have left it sitting over night with no luck. Have canceled the update using the reset procedure and started from scratch but keep getting stuck at the same place.

Receiver still seems to be working ok

Versions on my receiver:
Main Ver A1.91
Main Sub 01.18
Main Rom A1.191
PLD00.25
DSP1 36.60
DSP2 37.17
DSP3 38.13
GUI FPGA A080719A
PRG 00007621
DA 10003022
Real TA 08030a
HDMI A PLD 00.20
Digital FPGA 0.16
Video PLD 00.10

Any ideas on how to get the update to complete or if its actually going to make any difference from the Firmware version I am currently on? Unless I come up with anything else I assume my only option is to take it into a service center.

Thank you,
Jeff
