The foundation of the PR-SC885P is its toroidal transformer along with 2 independent audio and video transformers. You'll also find a blend of onboard technologies to prime your home theater for high-definition playback. You're looking at the first HDMI equipped OnkyoPro preamp processor to take up to four components with 1080p video and master-quality audio capabilities. All other signals, from 480i on up, can be upscaled to 1080p via HQV Reon-VX. Also, THX, Audyssey and Burr-Brown lend the very best of their expertise to round out this high-quality control center.
Special Features
HDMI 1.3a Switching
Reon-HQV HD video scaling up to 1080p
Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding
Had I known about this, I might have held off for it. There is just something about seperates that intrigues me.

I'm a little confused as to how the Onkyo and Integra and Onkyo pro lines are related, and how they compare. ( If this is the wrong thread, where should I go?)
First, I "need" (want) a new AVR or prepro that could serve as a central control for an HD video system and a multi-channel SACD and stereo audio system. I have power amps and speakers, and an HD projector. I am impressed with the features and initial reviews of the Onkyo 875 and 905 receivers. (I'm particularly interested in the audio quality, and the Onkyos have the ability to receive SACD sound via HDMI 1.3 and process it internally, plus all the new video audio formats. Along with controlling HD video, etc..)
!. Does the SC885P have all the features, including HDMI 1.3, of the Onkyo 905 (other than the power amps)?
2. In what respects would the 885 be an improvement over the 905 AVR, providedthe 905 was used as a preamp, using external power amplifiers? (Other than the elimination of the power amps, cooler operation, etc.) - Is it of a basically better or different design than the processing and preamp sections of the 905 receiver, or are the parts of higher quality? Would the audio be better ( if the same external amplifiers were used)? (The reason I ask is that I might use the Onkyo AVR's amps for some applications.)
3. Does the Integra line differ in quality from the Onkyo line, or the Onkyo pro line? Does their high-end AVR have all the features preovided in the Onkyo 905.
I suppose that my basic question is whether the 885, or the Integra line, would offer significant (and audible) advantages over the Onkyo 905, which is apparently going to be available at a significant discount, not much more (less?) than the 885.
Can anyone verify that the audio from the 885 would be better than that of the Onkyo 905, provided the same power amplifiers were used with each?
The reason I ask is that the 905 seems to be available at discount for less than the 885, even with the additional power amps. I understand that the 905will be updated by Onkyo, via an ethernet port. Same for the 885?
Ah well...I'm moving on. Just got word that the 885 won't ship until October at the earliest. If anyone has a good connection for the 9.8, drop me a PM.

I am curious as far as the differences between the 905 and the 885/9.8 as well. I know it lacks balanced outputs but if it is similar to the Integra 8.8 it has the full Reon menu ( I think
). Where have you seen pricing and availability for the 905?

The 905 is available here in the Houston area at Frys (I saw it yesterday), and at least one other dealer. Frys offers it at list, though the other dealer indicated (on the phone) that he was willing to offer a rather substantial discount. My point is they are apparently available in some areas, at some dealers, though of course I don't know about your area.

Appreciate the information. I will call a few dealers in my area tomorrow but the ones listed (mostly Circuit City) I doubt will have the 905 but lesser models. If anything I would like to see the new Onkyos in person.
Just posted this on the Integra thread, but I ordered the 885 yesterday and got it delivered today. The dealer was in MO, and the distributor in So cal.
I like many of you, was told it does not exist, it cannot be had, keep checking back, but this particular dealer was awsome and when I ordered, he said the distributor had 3 of them on hand.

Has anyone played with the ethernet capabilities of this? I hooked it up and hit it with a web browser. It shows a page with the Integra logo and a list of the names of all software engineers. Has "send test command" box and when i type something random goes to another page that says "write to lcd disply", however nothing happens when I enter any text.

I was wondering the same thing. The Onkyo pro site does not have the ethernet features checked for PlayForSure but the Integra does. The integra manual has nothing about the ethernet functions (downloaded a while back and it is now not on the web site). I have called Onkyo Pro about this and am waiting to hear back. I placed my order with a dealer in NJ and got a great price.
I posted this in the 9.8 thread but thought I'd add it to here for maximum coverage. Maybe Gary or another person who has one in hand can help me out here.

The delay with the picture has to do with the switch in resolution, you are going from 1080i to 480i and back. You could just set your cable box to just be 1080i for everything which should make things better. This probably wont do anything to your SD but it will solve the resolution switching problem. This is most likely the same issue with the OSD, I dont think the Onkyo outputs the display at 1080i or 1080p
I kinda figured this was the reason but had hoped that the delay would only be a second or two. 8 seconds is a REALLY long time when you're flipping between two shows one on HD and one on SD.
This thread has my interest very high on this pre/pro. I currently own a Denon 5805CI that is 4 months old but the upgrade bug to a pre/pro is hitting especially one that can decode all the new codecs. I was wondering and I am asking for opinions on what everyone thinks. Basically I have a B&K 200.7 amp and was wondering if the new Onkyo Pro 885 would compete sound quality wise with the Denon. I watch movies most of the time but will listen to two channel music in the evenings.
I am wondering how the 885 will compete with the Denon in features and sound quality. Does the 885 utilize the Audyssey EQXT for all channels? How is the two channel playback sound? Any issues with the Onkyo?
Sorry for all the questions but I have been looking at upgrading with either the Cary Cinema 11a and 11v, Anthem D2 and especially the new Denon Pre/Pro but they are a whole lot more money and I could possibly sell the 5805CI and put a whole lot of money in my bank account but I don't want to make a mistake when it comes to sound quality.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
One more quick question, does the Onkyo 885 do onscreen display via HDMI? My Denon does not and it is a little bothersome.
I got a message from my dealer today telling me Onkyo was shipping out the 885 today to them, and as soon as they got it (early next week she thought) they would ship it out to me.

I am guessing that you must be the other person that went on the group buy. I guess I am a bit optimistic with the one week guess, two is much more likely.
I'm just glad that at least we can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.
This is good news for those of us still waiting out there. It will be nice to get to the tweaking part of this thread and not the still waiting to get it in hand.

I am playing worst case scenario as far as the 2 week estimate. You could very well be correct (and I hope you are!) and maybe this time next week we will be enjoying the 885.
With any luck we may be able to set up our toys this weekend! I'm doubting they will show up by Friday but at least we know it will happen soon.
Now if I could only hurry my theater room along.......
Things are looking up here guys, the product roll out may actually be happening.
