Hi All,

Having read through a significant number of the posts, I'm not sure if I have or have not found the answer.

A week or so ago, my 10 month old reached up and pressed pretty much every button he could reach. I didn't think anything of it and then the next day tried to get it working. However, this time all of the HDMI inputs displayed a red/green crazy lined video sometimes appearing on only half of the screen.

The audio seemed to be fine for a few of the channels, but nothing else. I resetted the factory settings but to no avail. It's all packaged up ready to go but the postage costs are extortinate and from reading the earlier threads I'm guessing any repair will be too.

So the questions are: Is my HDMI board messed up, am I missing something, is it coincidence the little fella was playing with it before and what should I do?!

This is a typical symptom of a failed HDMI board. The video shows vertical pink and green stripes on the top half with snow on the bottom half of the screen... To repair the board would probably cost about $250, replacing it would be very expensive... ~$900-1200 is what I heard. Not sure where you are located but from Hawaii, shipping costs about $250 one way to the east coast to the Onkyo NJ service center... When you get it back, i would strongly recommend you have a cooling fan placed over the right rear of the chassis where the HDMI board is... The HQV Reon processor generates a lot of heat which dries out nearby caps which causes the failure.

If it's not a BIG screen, it's not a theater...

I'm often surprised at how many problems you folk in the good ol' USofA seem to have with your kit. Don't know if it's so much bad luck, not reading the manual - and even if they do, geting it wrong in setting up, or what?

I am still using the fabulous M9750 power amp to drive the recently upgraded 4 Peerless 12" bass drivers in my tri amped, marble sided main speakers. I've had two wonderful A 9070 amps for over 30 years driving my super tweeters and extraordinary Onkyo plastic mid range horns which I bought in Singapore in 1974!!!! (and wouldn't trade them for all the BMWs in China!) and only recently replaced one of them with the remarkable A 9750 digital amp.

I've had my 905 since late 2007 with the 1.06 fw and it has been putting a smile on my face ever since without a hitch! For the last three years it has been in my house in Greece where the temp in summer can reach over 40c and, as the HDMI board gets ridiculously hot, I simply placed it on the top shelf with a 12cm fan on top - and it is enough make the amp feel cool even!

The only two issues I have had recently, after a nasty storm and power failure, are I can't save my set up (Store Fail msg), which makes the second one a real drag, as when there is a power cut (which happens a bit too often down in my village) and despite a power regulator, I lose my settings and they come back all random. A ball breaker, but I know all the settings off by heart so it only takes me a couple minutes to re-do.

Any advice/suggestions to correct these annoying issues would be greatly appreciated as, apart from that, I am still in love with the big Onk - and all my other lovely Onkyo kit.

I had that happen a few times on my 875 and all I had to do was unplug it to return normal operation. Even a few weeks ago, the friend I sold my 875 to had this very issue and I told him to simply unplug it from the back of the AVR and it has been working just fine since.

I am not saying that it might not be the HDMI Board going south, but it is certainly worth trying to simply unplug it to see if it returns to normal operation.

The 805s seem to have HDMI board failure as often as as commonly as their Reon equipped 875/905 brethren

what I think is that its just a plain design flaw across the board...one that I have been lucky enough... with 3 failed HDMI boards on 3 different Onkyo units...to have been under the factory warranty

Without it...the unit is basically a brick as its not worth fixing

The worse news is that the xx07 series receivers are starting to have failed HDMI boards as well

so..the saga continues I guess

This might help users in the long term... go to XBRDepot.com and you can buy heat sinks with self-adhesive tape. They are about 1"x1" in size(they were originally designed for X-Box360 CPUs and are pretty cheap. They should help dissipate the heat from the HDMI Reon chips.

If it's not a BIG screen, it's not a theater...

Ironically....
All of the fans etc don't seem to make a whole lot of difference on these
They still fail at an amazing rate...Reon equipped or not
Besides that...if you have to go through all the fans and all the other stuff...and still fear that the HDMI board might go south anytime.....where is the enjoyment in that?

By the way...where do get this information that the Reon processor is putting out all the heat?
I have personally owned a non Reon equipped unit...that had a failed HDMI board as well...and it got just as hot as the 875 and 905 did

On another note Onkyo made me an offer on the buy
back of my 905
They offered me a refurbished 3009 receiver in exchange

First off..I am surprised they have refurbs of that unit already...I thought it was just now hitting dealers shelves

Secondly..I am not sure how I feel about that unit...the lack of a longer coverage warranty concerns me
The refurbs only have a 1 year warranty

Though on the other hand it seems that Onkyp products seem to be more trouble some in general...so perhaps a refurb will have the bugs worked out and prevent me from having to have a it serviced so quickly

except for pure power a 3009 is probably a better unit than the 905 is in every way

Anyway...I was concerned about the 1 year warranty as well that comes with refurbs...on an Onkyo product I wanta longer warranty

I second the comment about unplugging the unit for a reset to fix problems from time to time. When the system gets thoroughly bollixed, that particular solution works well. I do that about once a year it seems.

Got an update from Onkyo
they are doing a buyback on the 905 and giving me a new 5009 receiver

Based on everything..I would say they are trying to do the right thing

yes...they are giving me a free 5009 in exchange for the faulty 905

similar deal happened a few months ago with an 807 that they had worked on 3 times...in that case I was given a full retail price store credit...I then picked up a Yamaha A3000 in Magnolia Home Theater and used to retail store credit against the purchase

Recall though...the fact that I have had so many failures with Onkyo products documented... that they know about may have helped my case

However...they did refuse to replace my 5508 preamp
They did say I would have to take that one in for service

in regard to the 807
I bought a service plan from Best Buy when I bought the unit
It was in the shop 3x...under their plan that means replacement
In this case...and this was manager discretion...he gave me 100% retail of the 807, even though I only actually paid 35% of retail for it
I put the 100% retail store credit he gave me towards a Yamaha A3000..a stellar piece...and have been very pleased

Hello!

I got 2 damaged Binding Post (Negative and Positive). My left front speaker fell over and bent the left front speaker Binding Post on my 905. I just need to replace the Left Front Speaker Binding Post.

Is this something I can repair myself or do I have to send the 905 to Onkyo?

I opened the 905 and all I have to say is WOW!!! There are so many circuit boards in the way in order to reach all the binding posts which is at the bottom of the 905.

Anyone ever replace a damaged speaker binding post on the 905?

Repair might not be that easy as you think. Connectors are soldered to the board. So the board itself is likely damadged. If you are not familiar with electronics repair, do not try it yourself. But be aware that Onkyo service center will most likely decides to replace the whole board. It may cost you several hundred dollars.

Thanks for letting me know. I was hoping to replace ONLY the binding post and not the board. If it will cost me several hundred dollars, I might as well get a new receiver.

Hi again. Anyone had any experience with "Failed Store" msg when trying to save set up by holding 'setup' button and pressing 'enter'? Any help/advise would be much appreciated.

Don't recall seeing that. I have one of the very first 905's sold here in the US... also one of the early ones to receive the updates (was an unbelievable nightmare to find someone with the correct cable and knowledge to do the update).

Mine however stores info into memory, but anytime there is a power interruption or failure it loses everything and must be completely set up again from scratch.

For this reason I purchased a UPS just for the 905... wound up with 3 of them... one for the 905, one for the DVR, and one for the projector.

There are just two theories for successfully quarreling with a woman -- neither one works!

I've been thinking about doing the same, but haven't found any that are cost-effective for such use. Which did you buy?

Edit: Don't we need a UPS that outputs a true sine wave?

I just experienced the Bomb on my patched (a couple of years ago) 905 with ANH. I was smart and had the volume really really low. I can imagine that it may have blown my speakers if I had the volume up. No bomb via LPCM.
BTW the bomb only happens if I jump to ch.16. It doesn't happen if it plays straight through from the end of ch.15

make sure you call Onkyo, otherwise they will not attempt to fix this problem...

I couldn't hurt to call, of course, but I don't believe that this is an Onkyo problem. It seems to be the disc(s). For example, there are reports from users of the Oppo BDPs, using AVRS and pre/pros from other manufacturers.

Got a call back from Onkyo this morning. He asked for my serial # and said that they were able to replicate the bomb on a few of their models. I told them how Denon has released a fix for their receivers, and he said that might be helpful as they share a few of the same DSP chips. He said that he would send the info to upper management. I remain cautiously optomistic. *fingers crossed*

I've had my 905 since 07'. I've never had a problem with it. I use it almost exclusively for TV and movies but sometimes for music. About a year ago I started getting a loud buzzer type of noise (no music) when on "Tuner". It happens on all zones.

Has anybody ever heard of this. Is it worth contacting Onkyo at this point?
