On my 605 at 1080p or 1080i I don't get any OSD overlaid on the regular image. Doesn't HDMI repeater/pass-through mean that the signal just passes through the receiver HDMI from the source to the display device without any alteration? Maybe the 705 is different from the 605 though the spec lists it the same as "HDMI V1.3 repeater"

Here's what the 705 manual says about OSD (page 93):

Quote:

These settings determine how the operation
details are displayed.
Immediate Display
This preference determines whether
operation details are displayed
onscreen when an AV receiver/AV
amplifier function is adjusted.
On: Displayed (default).
Off: Not displayed.
Even when On is selected, operation
details may not be output if the input
source is connected to a COMPONENT
VIDEO IN or HDMI IN.

So it doesn't sound like you get any overlaid OSD when using a component or HDMI source.

Walked right in to a CC and got a great price today.

NO popping issues and have left it running for hours.

Nice little receiver.

I'd love to get my hands on a Blu Monster's Ball.-LilStinky

Refering to a possible release of said movie on BD LOL

The size is right, the power is right, set up was easy.....though it took me a while. I've still got some tweaking to do but right out the door I could tell it has a way better surround quality than my previous AVR had been capable of delivering. Of course time has passed and I suppose that my 4 -5 year only dead receiver had been passed up technologically.

When I first got the speaker's setup last night and finally got to turn it on to actual programming I was amazed. A HD version of Battlestar Gallactica was on and the characters walking around in the room on the show sounded as if they were in my living room with me. The Audiissey setup routine seems to work pretty well.

No popping at all so far..

And once it gets hot, do you get any popping noises through the speakers (the dreaded problem that the 605 and some 805 owners reported - I have a 605 with the popping noise issue and I'm trying to decide whether I should take my chances with another 605, a 705 or a different brand) thank you

I just hooked it up last night, and it gets pretty hot... so hot that I'm not putting anything on top of it. NO POPPING, however, during my 3 hours usage.

It's far hotter than the 605.

Other comments, it feels like a big upgrade to the 605 as far as features go. There are way more sound/video options to modify in the setup menu (which DOES work over HDMI) with the much nicer controller (which IS backlit, contrary to some previous posters).

I love all the new THX modes. You can overlay 7.1 on pretty much anything. There are specific THX 7.1 modes for games, cinema, etc., and each one comes in both Dolby Digital and DTS flavors. I look forward to experimenting.

One weird thing, the Audyssey took me a few tries to get working, claiming there was too much ambient noise. The house was completely quiet except the the house's air conditioning system, which is pretty darn quiet too. So, I had to turn off the A/C (summer in Texas, not fun) to get the Audyssey to work. After that, no more problems.

That said, I'm pretty impressed that the Audyssey on this one (compared to the 605, which maxes at 3) can take up to 8 listening areas into account for its measurements. The "Calculations" mode, though, even for 3 areas, takes a looong time (seemed like 8-10 minutes).

I'll report more after the more extensive testing I do over the weekend, but in short, I highly recommend this over the 605, and will be returning my 2-week old 605 to Circuit City today. : )

I decided to go with a Denon AVR-3808ci instead of my problem 605. I did not want to take another chance with an Onkyo, though I love the sound of the 605, I'm sure the 705 and up are even nicer. I've had good luck in the past with Denon, I hope this one is not going to disappoint me.

Now that you're saying the 705 runs even hotter than the 605, I'm glad I didn't try a 705.

I just think the Onkyo runs way too hot, between the LCD TV and the Onkyo 605 the room is the hottest in the house, I have to crank up the A/C while watching a movie and everyone in the house in the other rooms freezes! Of course, this is then good in the winter, you can leave it on all the time with some background music If it also made cool air in the summer, I'd be all over Onkyo.

The 605 does so its not a stretch that the 705 will. If you press the display button on the remote a few times you should see "MCH PCM 5.1" or the like.

You're too kind. We're all in this together. I'm looking real hard at the 705 meself. Not because I need it, but it does have enough more bells and whistles to warrant a good look see. I'm the one who picked up on CC's $549 price and didn't jump on it when i saw it. What a schmuck!!

Nice little receiver.

Did you have to negotiate/price match/etc to get the great price, or was it listed that way? Do you know if this is a national chain price, sale, etc; or a special for that store?

Thanks,

Hal

Has anyone tried to guage the power draw of either the 605,705 or 805 with for example a Kill-A-Wat meter

http://www.p3international.com/produ.../P4400-CE.html

PC Power supplies are being made now in the 80% or even higher efficiency range which also means a lot less heat (wasted electrictity) is blowing out the back of a PC

Less efficient Power is alseo much cheaper, I wonder of Onkyo is just not using the most efficient PSU's

I missed that too....I would have jump on it, but anyway do you know if this 705 does video switching? check on the specs but says in is not available when I did a comparison chart with 3 other receivers....it is now a little bit higher than 650.00 with CC online.

Mea culpa. My bad. Here's what the manual says on the "features" page:

"Backlit/Preprogrammed RI-Compatible Remote with
3 Macros and Mode-Key LEDs"

This is the same terminology used for the 605 which is not programmable. However, there is a section in the manual about remote learning so I guess it is programmable after all. Shoulda been reading instead of typing.

The 705's remote is almost twice the size of the 605's remote. Better layout, etc.

I found the code on the website. Do you have to order online in order to use it? I tried going thru the checkout process and didn't see a place to enter the code, so I aborted. Do you have to use a Circuit City issued credit card to use this, by chance?

1st lemme congratz everyone on their new 705. All this True HD receiver buzz has be ready to pounce on one of these new Onkyo receivers to. I am in the 605, 705, 805 budget. I hear internal component quality wise the 805 is better but the mounting options and overheating issues have me looking more at the 705. Before I make the plunge I would greatly appreciate answer to a few questions I have that seem like red flags to me.

I own a (pre-elite) xbox 360 so I only have component output. I just want to confirm that even if I get into the secret menu the best I can hope for is to be downconverted from 1080p component to 720p hdmi output. Is this correct? Or if there a way to make that signal output to 1080p hdmi also?

I heard the 805 pops a lot and the 605 too. I heard nothing about popping on 705, but logic would tell me that probably does too. Has anyone detected any popping or clicking?

On the same topic I heard ps3 owners with this 805 get popping all the time, is this true? If its kinda true please explain when it happens.

I am a gamer and a movie watcher so if this receiver takes away from my experience it might be better to wait for the next manufacturers to haul out the true hd receivers (I hope thats not true cause i waited a long time already) On the 360 being downconverted if thats true I will just keep component running to my tv and use optical to output directly to the receiver.

Thx in advance!
