Hello everyone, very helpful thread here! I've been thinking hard about buying the 2808/988 and I'm just curious whether this unit is for me. I am a relative noob to audio, but I want to get started on the right foot. I've spent the weekend reading every single post on this thread and now have a few questions.
My current setup:
Infinity tss450 5.1 Speakers
60 gb PS3
I plan on running only the audio from my PS3, my HD Tivo, and my Motorola STB to this receiver via optical cable. I have enough HDMI inputs on my TV and have my Harmony Remote to switch everything properly, so running video through the receiver is unnecessary. I also plan on using the Infinity speakers until this summer when I begin building out my own speakers from components purchased from Parts Express.
My questions are:
1) How much of an upgrade will the 2808/988 be over my current Yamaha, audio-wise? I can see the differences on paper, but what do you owners think? Since I'll only be using it for audio, will it be worth the jump if I can get this receiver for around $600? Or should I save some money for the 3808, as some recent posts dictate?
2) I want HD audio. If I understand correctly, right now the PS3 does not properly handle True HD and DTS MA. I'm hoping that this can be corrected via firmware update in the future. Assuming that is the case, this receiver should be able to fully handle True HD and DTS, and handle it well, correct?
I still have a few months before I begin making anymore purchases, but I wanted to get some owners' thoughts early in the process. Thanks so much!
