Hey everyone, I have two questions:

1) how does this receiver compare to the Pioneer 1018 and,

2) Is it possible for one to have the BD player going into the receiver via HDMI and have the video output to the monitor be through S-Video? Before I get flamed for that question let me explain that I am upgrading my receiver to be followed by an HD display but for now all I can do is output S-video but want the HD sound.

Thanks.

Making the transition to HD.

there is no receiver that will down-convert HDMI to any sort of analog output

you can probably run a video cable direct from the BD player to your TV however for the time being until you upgrade your display.

Not familiar with this, and you don't mention having wireless issues, rather just working with the iPod itself, however, connections seem pretty straight forward:

Dock control cable to 2808- Dock Control
R/L Audio to 2808 - R/L Audio In VCR(ipod)
S-Video cable to 2808 - S-Video In VCR(iPod)

Verify the VCR Assign settings and you should be good to go. If that's what's already been done, try assigning it to another source and of course that source's input jacks and see if that works for you. The VCR is the default for the iPod but doesn't have to be used.

AVRs from different vendors tend to produce different sounds. Your best bet is to obtain both and keep the one you prefer personally as someone else might not have the same "ear" as you.

Try pressing either the D/ST button on the remote or pressing the Direct/Stereo button on the main panel. This should get you DD 5.1 without any additional processing.

I have not been able to get far enough along to even go wireless. I have not been able to access the GUI at all...and now it doesn't even stay on the sceen for more than half a second.

'VCR Assign settings' you just go to VCR input settings and go down to ipod, change to assign...and that's it...right?

Based on the manual, yes that is correct. Have you tried assigning to another source?

What has Denon tech support said? Which iPod are you docking? Is there a way you can confirm the S-video cable is good?

Fellow 2808/988 owners:

Well, there are a couple of weeks left before the release of the Audyssey Dynamic EQ & Volume upgrade for 3808 and above owners and I suggest that we call Denon and PM DenonJeff (I've already done so) to request the upgrade for 2808/988 AVS members.

Anyway, I feel its worth a shot so please join in.

Thanks!

I've done so as well. The CSR I spoke with didn't even realize the 2808 could be updated. He said he would upgrade my request to a Level 2 tech support request and someone would get back with me next week sometime. Emphasize you didn't pay $1200 (regardless of what you really paid) for an AVR only to have to buy another one just to get the upgrade (which is the way they're currently looking at it) when the 2808 can receive the same firmware update as the 3808 is expected to get. They still couldn't estimate the cost, but I'm guessing $100-$125.

I have not talked to Support. I suppose I should.

I am docking a 6th generation 80 gb classic...and a 4gb nano. Actually I have 2 80's.

I have 2 ASD-3w's in my possession. they both have the same issue..so unless I got 2 different bad s-video cords, that should be the issue.

What is the best way to reach tech support.

ps....does the clicking of the receiver...and the menu issue sound more like and asd, avs, or user problem?

According to the following chart, it most likely is not the iPod model you're using as long as the Classics have the latest firmware update. Given you have two ASD-3Ws and neither is working, it's most likely just a setting issue somewhere and tech support could probably answer that question much quicker being more familiar. I've called them a number of times in the past year ... with a wait time of only minutes at times and 30 minutes at other times, just depends on time of day that you call. Denon also has a FAQ database on their website which has answers to about 200 questions. I hadn't reviewed it in awhile so I did with the following general information retrieved from the database:

(1) Tech Support (USA) 800-497-8921 / 201-762-6665 9am - 5pm
(although for Aug they had extended hours to 7pm and may still have them)

(2) Video iPod - Ensure settings as follows:
Videos --> Video Settings --> TV Out (set to ON)
Videos --> Video Settings --> TV Signal (PAL or NTSC)

The following answers from the FAQ database apply to questions previously asked in earlier posts the past few weeks:

(3) Center channel should in most all cases be set to SMALL

(4) Unless Front L/R speakers cover full 20-20khz range, they should be set to SMALL as well (regardless of physical size) especially if subwoofer output is weak.

(5) If the majority of your AVR audio use is for watching DVDs, the subwoofer should be set to LFE+MAIN

(6) If the Denon AVR model number ends in 5,6, or 7 then HDMI is 1.1. If 8 or higher then 1.3a.

I can not get the sub to produce any sound after the initial auto setup. I found some settings, chose LFE and small speaker. I ran the setup program again with same results. Also, I cant seem to get the radio to play, FM or AM. It is rather confusing to me using the owners manual. I would appreciate some help on this . Thanks in advance.

To be clear ... you're getting a test tone "during" the auto setup but getting no sound after the setup? Is this correct? Also, check to see if your sub itself has an on/off switch and if so, it's turned on. A poster a short time ago had this issue and the solution was turning the switch ON. Also in addition to an ON/OFF switch, some subs have their own volume knob. Make sure it's turned on as well. The Tuner (radio) works better with the antenna plugged in. Is it?

Yes, it is turned on however when the test is done I do hear from all speakers but the sub. I followed the owners guide to turn off the volume and set crossover to max. And yes the radio plugs are in their proper places. How do you select either fm or am? Maybe it is just operator error. Thanks

Since the Auto Setup comes first, if you're not getting a tone from the sub it generally means there is a connectivity problem. Do you have the RCA cable plugged into the Pre-Out marked "SW"? Also, make sure under Manual Setup that Subwoofer is set to ON. What are "radio plugs"? There is only a single antenna plug. When the source is set to Tuner, the radio stations are changed by using the CH +/- on the remote. It cycles through the FM stations and the AM stations.

Yes the rca is plugged into the the sub plug on back of the avr. I meant to say that the coaxial plug is plugged in for the radio. I will try to use the channel +/- to get something.

Just wanted to make sure you were just working with the antenna coax plug and nothing else. Stick with the manual. It takes a little time to understand, but eventually you'll get it. For the Tuner, check p. 44, on the Main remote press TU and then BAND to cycle between AM and FM. Not sure about the sub issue, if connections are good. I'd try a Master Reset and then do the Auto Setup again. I'm guessing the sub itself has worked with another AVR?

Sorry. You have to make sure the proper source (TUNER) is selected first either by turning the large dial on the left side until it reads TUNER or you can press the TUNER button on the Main Remote (lower left corner). Then press the Select button to bring up the LED panel, select TU (making sure DEV1 shows otherwise select TU again to switch it back from DEV2 to DEV1. Then press MODE and that should work for you.

Master Reset, p.50
Turn off AVR.
Press button while simultaneously pressing , and .
Once the display starts flashing at intervals of 1 sec, release the buttons.

One last thing before I do a master reset, when I hit the tuner button should I see Tuner with "ext in" below that?? Still nothing happens when I hit the mode button. Thanks for your help so far.,

There are 7 sets of memory banks (A - G) of about 8 stations each (e.g. A1, A2, A3, ..., A8), 1st bank is FM, 2nd is AM, and the rest are FM. If I use the dial on the AVR and turn until TUNER appears, then "5CH Stereo" shows up below it because that is the last simulation mode I was using when I was listening to a radio station. When I press the TUNER button (just below #7 - VCR/DVR), I get the last station I was listening to that happens to be in the A4 Memory along with the station call letters "WLOQ" and the simulation mode I have it in which reads "5CH Stereo". Pressing the TUNER button again cycles to the AM B4 station and then back to A4 again. In order for the BAND or MODE icons to work, you have to first press the TU icon (make sure DEV1 shows at top just to the right of the TU icon) which brings up a new LED panel of icons which shows BAND and MODE. Pressing the BAND icon should cycle between AM and FM while pressing MODE puts it in either AUTO ("AUTO" light displayed on Main panel where the AVR goes to the next strongest station automatically by pressing either the up arrow icon or down arrow icon depending on direction of the search desired) or MANUAL ("AUTO" light OFF where you have to press the up arrow or down arrow icons to move up or down the radio dial by increments each time you press the arrow icon)

If you're getting "EXT IN" under TUNER then sounds like you need to do a Master Reset and start over. Might make things easier, especially what with the crossover changes you've made.

Someone just asked that same question a couple days ago with no actual comparison response. There's actually a thread already started here although only one response. Here's a few reviews on the Denon 1909, although your best bet is to buy both and return the one you don't want.

(2) Video iPod - Ensure settings as follows:
Videos --> Video Settings --> TV Out (set to ON)
Videos --> Video Settings --> TV Signal (PAL or NTSC)

How do you get to these video setting? I have been through the menu items tons....and these are not there.
