I have been looking for a replacment for my current reciever which does
not have HDMI inputs. I have also recently aquired a Sunfire Cinema Grand
Series II 5 ch. amplifier, and I was wondering if anybody can recommend an equally hi-end per/pro or reciever that can match its fidelity. HDMI 1.4a is ideal, as well as DLNA 1.5, and maybe XLR balenced outputs, but only if the pre/pro or reciever is a true balanced topology. After all I only have about 12" to go between the amp and the pre/pro so this is not high on my list. Support for 7.2 would also be great. I am not sure if the pre/pro's of today provide much benefit over the high-end receivers of today, so even though I am not using there amplifier section I would still like a very clean preamplifier section with most of the bells and whistles. In the future I hope to grow the system to two subs (only one now) and add another high end stereo amp. Let me know
what you think?

Thanks,
Mike

Did you look at page 1? What's your budget? I think you could look at the new Marantz, Integra/Onkyo, but it's hard to steer you if we don't know the budget. The Marantz is known for sound quality and the AV7005 has received good reviews by owners and professionals.

The only thing balanced in a "reasonably priced" pre-pro would be the output stages. Higher end units can offer balanced DACs and volume controls, but that's costly. With a 12" or even a 12' run, it's unnecessary.

Thanks for the recommendations.. I am looking at the Pioneer SC-37, the Marantz, Integra/Onkyo, and possibly the Arcam FMJ AV888, but this is on the high end of my price range and does not have HDMI 1.4a till the spring of this year. My question is the Arcam going to really be worth the extra money?? Can you guys recommend any others? Am I missing any choices? I think by requiring 1.4a and looking for network features like DLNA 1.5 this eliminates a lot of choices even from the ultra high end equipment.

Thanks,
-Mike

I PM'd Eric with a method that would allow anyone on the forum to submit a processor and have the images automatically created and uploaded once it was approved by him, but he never responded. It would sure make it easy IMO.

Hi

When you do get around to updating your first post, you can FINALLY include the HDMI 1.4 Edition of the Theta Digital Casablanca III-HD!

I recieved my CB-IIIHD, which was an upgraded Casablanca III about 6 weeks ago.

ATI/Theta also accepting orders for new built CB-IIIHD's at this point, but sadly, I believe their rather generious trade-in program for CB-I and CB-II machines expires tomorrow, along with their 1/2 price sale for the new DACs that some upgraded machines will require or you might just have wanted to add when you upgraded from any previous version of Casablanca.

As an incentive and introductory offer, the 1/2 price DAC sale does continue until April 15th, 2011 when ordering a new built Casablanca III-HD.
So for example, this would mean a $5,000 discount will still be available for the CB-IIIHD when configured with two Xtreme DAC cards, and a discount of almost $2,000 will still be available for a CB-IIIHD configured with two of their Premium DAC cards.

In any case, when two of their DAC cards are installed, mixed or matched, the CB-IIIHD will be configured for 8 channels of output, but the user can decide how these 8 channels will be used.
For example it could be configured as 5.3, 6.2 or 7.1

If even greater flexability, or if up to 12 channels of output is desired, a third 4 channel DAC card, of either of the types previously mentioned, can still be added for 1/2 of it's normal MSRP untill that April 15th cut-off date. After which time, the additional DAC card will be available for its full MSRP.

In place of the third DAC card, as an additional and very unique option, a digital output card that can actually output a digital signal for up to 12 channels is available.
It is designed to connect to Thetas external 2 channel Gen VIII DACs!
The volume of these external DACs will be sync'd and controled by the CB-IIIHD through a proprietary connection.

Typically, I think alot of users are considering using just a single Gen VIII for the front stereo pair and will continue to use their internal DAC cards for the rest of their system.

The CB-IIIHD will of course accept bitstream or LPCM to internally decode all of the newest Dolby Digital TruHD and DTS-Master Audio codecs.

I will say, IMO, the CB-IIIHD sounds wonderful and I'm very happy that I was able to hold out for it untill it actually beame available.

TURN IT UP!

Folks, I'm working on a conversion to google docs following in the footsteps of the blu-ray thread. Am conversing with pgwalsh on how to do this... Need to round up all the CES 2011 activity too.

Please stand by technical difficulties are temporary.

Congratulations on the update.
It looks fantastic.
You have put a lot of work on it and it shows.
Just a couple of fine tuning items for Bryston.
I believe it is 1.4 (not 1.3).
James Tanner also suggests that Audyssey but only below 200 would be their room correction if they go that way. Refer to Audioaficionado for the details.
Thanks again for all the good work.

Only 5.1 LPCM. It is HDMI 1.1 only.

Mea culpa. It is now in process.

The spreadsheet is globally editable on Google Docs. Update the "Next Version" tab, and note the changes on the changelog.

https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?...thkey=CK3e8tQD

I will lock a copy of the sheet & post the changes to post #1 of the thread as it evolves. Unfortunately I still have to do screen shots of the table to get post #1 updated.

Please help me keep it up to date going forward.

I can revert changes out if sillyness happens.

All added. Plus the DHC 40.2 and 80.2

I note the audiolab AP8000 is discontinued.

Doesn't look like much happened at CES 2011 from the SSP perspective. Cary showed the Cinema 12. Primary change appeared to be HDMI 1.4.

I still have yet to go review CEDIA 2010.

Eric,

I when I get back from vacation, I will help setup a process to automate the image update for the first page. I just don't have access to my main computer or server. Once it's done you wont have to do a screen capture or anything. I'll send you the details when I get back.

Cheers!

Peter

The spreadsheet should not be limited to what are deemed current MPCM pre/pros. Rather, it should retain discontinued/replaced models but move them to a separate section. Many users may be interested in pre/pros in the new old stock or used markets.

Sorry that has never been the focus of this thread. There was a thread focused on legacy pre/pros running for a while but it is no longer maintained. Feel free to start a new one!

I have deprecated the tracking of newly announced prep/pros for two reasons. Smaller manufacturers have been horrible about hitting dates. And since this thread started in 2007, HDMI has mostly been assimilated by the pre/pro vendor community, so the announcement rate has died down. We are now into a more 'steady state' market than 2007.

A helpful contributor added the Lexicon MC8 to the spreadsheet.

There seems to be a semi-announcement of a MC8 v2 on the old Lexicon web page. But the new Lexicon by Harmon web page makes no mention of the MC8 or MC8 v2 at all.

Anyone know the status of the MC8 v2?

Here is a spread sheet I put together as a quick reference for my processor search. My requirements are HDMI 1.4 and great sound quality...

https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?...pSVo3OVE&hl=en

Maybe you could merge the two sheets to help out future buyers..

Thanks,

There's a link on the front page to the main spreasheet. Should only take about 5 minutes to copy and paste them.

The MC-8 V2 is a firmware & mic card upgrade only. The current version is V2.01, which dates to 2008.

Good Afternoon Eric,

I called Classe Audio and they confirmed that Classe SSP-800 can pass LPCM over HDMI.

If you'd like to update the table.

I updated to "Next Version" sheet for the SSP-800 to reflect 5 HDMI inputs (went from 4 to 5 with new HDMI board) and 7.3 output channels (it can support three separate/different subwoofer signals, each with own delay, gain, EQ).
