: First, let me say right up front that I don't own either of these processors. However, like many of you, I'm in the market for an HDMI-compliant pre/pro with all the latest decoders that will process any bitstream output via HDMI from Blu-Ray or HD-DVD players. Likewise, like me, many of you have/may be wondering what, if any, differences there are between the two processors. I apologize if this is redundant/covered in the other official threads. That said, here is what I found out.
First, I downloaded the manuals for both processors and printed out the Features, Specifications, and Front and Back panel layouts and descriptions, and the remote controls. I then did a line-by-line comparison for each and noted similarities or differences. The results are:Features
: Identical (see note)Back Panel
: Identical inputs, outputs, connections.Front Panel Display
: The Specifications page for the PR
-SC885 lists Balance Inputs: Balance L, Balance R in the Audio Inputs section and Speaker Outputs: HDMI Main (FL, FR, C, SL, SR, SBL, SBR, SW) in the Audio Outputs section. These two items are not included in the respective sections on the DTC 9.8 Specifications page. However, these inputs/outputs are present on the Back Panel of the DTC 9.8. IMHO, this is simply an omission on DTC 9.8 spec's page.Front Panel Buttons
Obviously, the front panel layouts are different with different colored Power buttons and Master Volume controls and the Onkyo Pro has quite a few buttons concealed under a flip-down door. However, the DTC 9.8 has ALL the same buttons as the Onkyo Pro (including those under the door on the PR
-SC885). The Onkyo does have four buttons that ARE NOT on the DTC 9.8 Front Panel. They are:Pure Audio Button and Indicator
(main Front Panel)Level Button
(under door)Up/Down Arrow Buttons
(under door)Digital Input Button
(under door)Remote Controls
The Onkyo is an RC-690M and Integra is an RC-691M. However, both appear to have identical buttons and functions.Summary
Since both are essentially made by the same company (correct me if I'm wrong), you wouldn't expect to see much difference between the two. I really can't address any differences in build quality, video, or audio processing since I don't own either unit. I'm assuming that both use the same chipsets, processors, etc., so again I'm assuming there wouldn't be any signficicant differences in performance. However, I will leave that up to the actual owners and/or testors to document.
Thanks for bearing with on this comparison and I hope you find it somewhat helpful. Again, I apologize if this info is posted in some of the other threads. I just thought it might be a good idea to lay all this out in one place, as a starting point if you will, before moving on to more detailed, technical reviews.
Happy New Year to all!
