Neither can I. Considering his position in the company, I thought he must have been "nuts" to even think he could keep up with such an open subject thread as this. OTOH, I believe he'll be back...

Yes, which is why it might be a good idea to move Denon product discussions to their respective owners' threads elsewhere in the Forum. I can't imagine him being able to tackle the entire backload of questions now in this thread and those that will follow. Hopefully, if we quiet it down now, and the backload's not too overwhelming, maybe he'll make a stab at it. It was his thread, after all.

Jeff,
Welcome back. Have you had a chance to evaluate the problems that people have had with the latest AVR firmware "upgrade," mostly with regard to Internet radio?

Can you provide a little more detail on your specific issue? I'm picking up my 5308 today and I'd like to see if it has the same problem - since I did notice a little bit of a "light-dark flicker" on the 4308 on the last day I used it (only with Blu Ray though), I'm concerned about this one now that others may have a similar issue. I originally disregarded my issue thinking it was one of many potential settings on the PS3 or Mits DLP TV. So, I've been playing around with the various settings to be prepared for a good test of the 5308 (and I have a brand new set of certified HDMI cables).

Very rash statement without any proof, wouldn't you say. Hopefully he won't be too offended and withdraw. I wouldn't blame him if he did. He's helping us and you're pissed off that he isn't spending his entire life here? Please!!

Product: AVR-3808ci
Issue: Unable to upscale Composite source through HDMI

In the monster AVR-3808ci thread there are many of us reporting the same issue. We have various Composite sources (SNES and N64 in my case) that the AVR-3808ci is not upscaling. I get the audio, but no video from either the SNES or the N64.

I am outputting the video via HDMI to a Samsung HL-T6187 LED DLP.

There is a footnote in the owner's manual concerning game machines and non-standard video resolutions....SNES and N64 output some odd resolutions for most games (256 × 224, 320 × 240)...

Has anyone experienced this one....

Just recently bought a AVR-888 (2308ci) and love it. Unfortunately, I'm experiencing one hiccup that's probably due to operator error!

I cannot get a video signal to display out of the front panel V.AUX video input (the RCA/composite video input). We hooked up a karaoke system to those inputs and are able to get the audio to be output fine but no video along with it. (checked the outputs of the karaoke system & they're working fine) I only use the HDMI monitor out to my Mits HC4900 projector. Manual says that the receiver is capable of this video conversion (composite video input -> HDMI output).

Any advice? Thanks much

Should work.
Recheck your connections on back of amp and settings in the set up menu.

Yeah, I have already a few times already unfortunately and everything looks "right".

It was interesting because I did find a note in the Denon manual on the "Video Conversion Function" page......it reads:

When a non-standard video signal from a game machine or some other source is input, the video conversion function might not operate

So maybe a karaoke system is "non-standard" and is causing this.....? Any thoughts Jeff?

DenonJeff,

I just got an AVR 888 from Dakmart (REFURBISHED) and I connected my cable box with HDMI to the receiver, then run HDMI to the TV.
I powered everything up, went to setup to do the speaker calibration. The OSD came up on the screen, then I started the auto routine going through the speakers and gave me an error that the center speaker was out of phase. I clicked cancel, shut down, and inspected the speaker wire at the receiver and at the speaker and all was well, so I powered up again ready to restart the calibration, and I got no video and no audio, through HDMI or component. No output, period

1. If I connect the HDMI cable straight from the STB to the TV, I get video.
2. I used different HDMI cables, that didn't work.
3. I reconnected my old Sony receiver, all the speakers work.
4. I run component cables instead of HDMI, it doesnt work.
5. The volume in the remote works backwards, the rest appears OK. up is down for the volume and viceversa.
6. If I attempt to start the auto speaker setup from the receiver screen menu, the word "wait" starts blinking and the receiver locks up blinking like that. I have to shut off to unlock it.
7. The reset by powering up while holding A+B has no effect.
8. The display in the receiver works.

DenonJeff, in 5 weeks I will be gone to Afghanistan on a 15 month deployment. Please help me out. The warranty is only 90 days out of Dakmart, and I don't want to leave with this issue hanging.

Thanks,
Bruma

All, I just purchased a Sony XBR4 52 LCD. I need to change my receiver to match this new tv. The Magnolia High Fi sales folks recommend both the 1908 and DSX 90 for the same price. I'm a helo pilot for 35 years so hearings shot...so fine tuned sound is not as important as the receiver matching my tv re technology and hook ups etc. I plan on using my existing Bose 401s and Bose model 100 side and back speakers.

Any advice on which receiver is the best or are they equivalent.

Thanks, Alaskasar

Until we hear from Jeff again I will answer:

1) Yes and no: Zone 2 can play digital audio from some sources. Mine 4308 does. Just have to select the input source for zone 2. But ..... unfortunately it cannot play digital sources from HDMI or Denon Link (see manual). This means that you can forget DSD signals from your SACD player (if you have one). Or if your PS3 is setup to multichannel PCM (to get the new blue-ray sound formats) you can forget that as a source for plain old audiophile CD sound in zone 2. So if we assume that HDMI is the connection of choice for the new generation of blue-ray players, then just forget the zone 2 feature.

I can forget listening to SACDs over my STAX electrostatic earphones, which need a powered output. And even if I buy an external amplifier for the Stax, then it is not possible to use the 4308 as source. Unless I throw my loudspeakers away.

(In that aspect I liked the Onkyo 905 better, which let you select between A and B front speakers with no limitations)

Jeff,

I'd be interested in establishing a definitive position on the following two questions/issues (Denon XX08 Multi-Zone Receivers).

1. Is is true that Zone 2 can not play digital audio sources? My testing indicates that this is the case (no audio at all). When I connect to the same source using analogue I instantly get audio in Zone 2.

If this is the case, can I circumvent this "feature" by using both digital and analogue cable paths from my source to the receiver? If so, will the receiver "prefer" the digital source for Zone 1 and "fall back" to the analogue source for Zone 2? What behaviour will be exhibited if I am then running Zone 1 and Zone 2 off the same source simultaneously (e.g. will analogue be used for both sources)?

2. Is it possible to have the receiver OSD work when using only component inputs (from source) and HDMI output (to monitor). The manual is ambiguous. In my testing I can not achieve this outcome. For any non-component source (e.g. Tuner) there is no problem with OSD, only with component sources.

Any advice or assistance you can provide is appreciated.

Kind regards.

Hey Alaskasar,
What part of Alaska do you live in. I lived in Anchorage for three years. What an experience that was. If you see any Copper River Kings send them my way

I'd go with the 1908!

I'd also like to know this. I have been using my wonderful AVR-4800 for over 5 years and wanted to upgrade to the 5803 to get HDMI switching and all the other great technology that it has. But after reading all the comments on the new AVP-A1HDCI, from Jeff and others, I am seriously considering saving up some more and getting that.

Help!

I just got my 3808 this week, but I can't seem to get it to connect to the internet (for Internet Radio and/or Firmware Updates). My unit arrived with FW version 1.57 running on it. I connected the 3808 to my home network via ethernet. My internet connection is via Verizon DSL using a Westell Modem / Router. No matter what I do, I can't seem to get the 3808 to connect to the internet. I have tried to connect from several rooms in my house as well as connecting the unit directly to the Modem/Router, but no connection. I have tried to set the IP address automatically as well as assigning a static IP address. I can see the 3808 on my network from various computers (PC and Mac). From the 3808, I can also see and play music from a media server that is on the network. In an effort to rule out potential sources of the problem, I took the unit to my parents house and connected to their network which is connected to the internet via a Comcast cable modem but still nothing. I cannot connect to Internet Radio and I can't even check for a Firmware update. When I try to go to radiodenon.com, I get a message saying that it can't find the MAC address I am entering (presumably because the unit has never sent a message to let radiodenon.com know that this MAC address exists).

I feel like pulling my hair out in frustration!

I have read many posts of people having problems with Firmware updates, but from what I can tell, they are at least able to connect to the internet. Might it be a problem with my specific 3808? I'm wondering if I need to return the unit to 6th Ave Electronics.

Any help, suggestions, or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
