Does Yamaha release new recievers every year? The 661 came out in March of 07, so I was wondering if the successor is near? Basically the 661 suits my needs, but I can wait a month if the new model has a slight improvement. Currently I have a PS3 that "forces 1080P/24" so the 661 will work for me, but my gut feeling is that the successor will not require 1080P/24 to be forced. This would be a benifet if I decide to buy a cheap used HD-DVD player.

I'm in the market for a 661 too (or a comparable AVR) so I'd be very interested in the answer to this question. Got no problem waiting a couple months if something improved is coming

AFAIK, Yamaha has both a fall and a spring release. Be nice to see them go back to the power levels of the 659 in that price range.

Since Yamaha has both a Fall and Spring release, is it safe to assume that if there is no announcement of a 661 successor now, that they plan on releasing a successor in the Fall? It is the middle of Feb. so I would assume we would of already heard something on a new pruduct that would be released in March or April, agree??? If so, i'll just get the 661 now, no reason to wait till the Fall.

it's weird that there has been no news. Yamaha should be releasing the replacement by April, but we haven't heard anything yet.

yamaha claims to start shipping the new receivers very soon, if not already. the web site does not yet show the new models.

rxv663-same price point as the 661, same features mostly as 661 plus hdmi up-conversion, and new 7.1 audio formats decoded, this puppy is giving some serious technology at a 499.00 map price
rxv563-new receiver option at a new pricepoint
rxv463-not sure on details yet
rxv363-not sure on details yet
rxv1801-not sure on details yet

The HDMI conversion would be very cool to have for convenience. I'm assuming it'd have the OSD over HDMI also, but I can't find a manual. No mention of DSD on either side of that chart, so I can't tell if it's still there.

My 661 had HDCP handshake issues with my Panasonic AE900, wonder if this would fare better.

Certainly a bargain HDMI 1.3 pre/pro with those pre-outs, for sure.

I wonder if the 663 will now pass 1080P/24 without it needing to be "forced" by the player.

No idea. A Google search on the model # gives the Yamaha page above, a page in Russian, and this thread. No press release, etc. that I saw. Chip's reasoning makes sense to me, though.

Can't tell if it'll still be able to apply DPLIIx to 5.1 LPCM, or to an internally-decoded TrueHD/DTS-HD MA bitstream.

JandR is figuring on mid/late March, but that could easily become April given the way these things go.

This is great news. I'll finally be upgrading my aging Yammy RX-V995 I've been using for the last 8 years.

Only two HDMI inputs; that's a bit dissapointing in a $500 AVR being introduced in 2008.

I hope it does, I need a reciever that will matrix 5.1 PCM to 7.1 PCM. Thats why I was looking into the 661. The only draw back to the 661 was it needed the player to "force" 1080P/24, which the PS3 can. So otherwise I'll just get the 661.

Isn't that going to be a step down in basic sound quality? Wasn't that a $1000+ receiver?
