Went to a higher end store here in Barrie ontario canada today and talked with a guy who acts like he knows everything in the world about home theater etc. Total dik....lol

ie.
- "Onkyo is low end and only sold at big box stores etc. "
- "to get true high def from a projector you need to spend at least 4k"
you know etc. he was one of those guys that you would like to put in his place.

anyways not to get too sidetracked, he was saying there are tons of movies that are encoded in 7.1 and said that all movies like Starwars, LOTR, and Cars for instance (on DVD...not blu-ray) are true 7.1 formatted etc. He then went on to say just look at the back and pointed out StarWars episode 1.

I saw 5.1 surround ex. He said thats how you identify 7.1 encoded discs.

He then went on to bash this forum a bit, but i wont go into detail (unless of course you'd like to hear me vent some more...lol)

ok just thought id throw this out there and see what you think about his statements etc. He may very well be 100% right, cause im new to 7.1.

Anyways i do not recommend this place at all. What a creep....lol

Surround EX is 5.1 discrete channels, with a surround-back channel matrix encoded into the left & right surround channels (but that doesn't make it 6.1 discrete channels).

There are no 7.1-channel soundtracks on DVD. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

5.1 surround EX is 5.1 discrete channels with one matrix encoded rear channel. At best, it can be considered 6.1. In no way, shape or form is it 7.1. Discrete 7.1 is rare, but can be found on BluRay, not DVD.

Just to offer a counterpoint to some of his other statements:

Onkyo receivers offer the best bang-for-the-buck, IMHO, and are not "low-end".

"true high def" to many implies 1080P (although 720P qualifies for that tag). There are many projectors available less than $4k which do it.

Summary: you called it: he's an ignorant, arrogant prick. Get used to it, this hobby/industry is full of them!

lol. perfect! thank you guys for clarifying this ....much appreciated. He is a prick for sure.

i was telling one of my good friends about this clown who has a lot of super high end HT gear...(by super to me I mean approx 20-30 grand, although its possible to spend a lot more) about this goof and my explanation to him was the guy at the store was one of those guys you just wanna "pop" in the head once he opened his yap.

This guy was trying to sell me a Pioneer Elite VSX-94 for 1900 bucks...LOL seems really steep for me. I dont have a problem with Pioneer elites, they are nice, but for what I need I can have a Onkyo 805 for 600$ plus tax and this one has THX-Ultra 2 not THX select like the pioneer model.

Thanks again guys. Have a good one.
