If you got two highly directional FM antennas and hooked one to the transmitter and one to the receiver you probably can reach 500 feet. But two good antennas will be over $100.

Ramsey Electronics has/had FM transmitter kits.

I take it you're hooking this thing into your home stereo or something?

The sound quality on those things always blows. I've (unfortunately) owned three of them. Good thing they were all gifts or freebies. Even with an antenna, you're looking at maybe 100 feet of usable range.

If you're just walking to get the mail, how about these?

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-RS-...0024266&sr=1-1

These have a range of 150 meters, which is damn close to 500 feet. Plus, you can use it around the house or whatever.

Don't believe everything on the Interwebz! A duck's quack DOES echo!

I might just open it up & see if I could wire a VHF/UHF transformer to it & hook up an Antanna to it

The "antanna" (sic) is not the problem, it's the power of the x-mitter.
