I have experienced it for the past few weeks, as have many others on other forums. No one seems to be able to explain what the cause is. Can you?

What is it?
A series of electronic beeps or tones lasting for a couple of seconds in the background. Some have described it as an old cell phone ring, or a video game from the 70s.

When does it occur?
It's most noticeable on talk shows like Letterman, only when the audience applauds loudly, or during sporting events like football games and only when the crowd cheers loudly.

Where does it occur?
Digital channels on multiple cable providers, Fios, Comcast, etc, and OTA. On multiple networks, CBS, FOX.

Experts, what is it and why are the networks broadcasting this annoying sound?

The single most fascinating post I've read in a long time

Seriously, I take in my share of major network viewing, at realistic levels, on a good system, and I do not remember hearing anything like that. Any particular program/time stamp?

Thanks

Alien chatter? Homeland security devices causing crosstalk?

You need to record it for signal analysis.

It's all different programs. And different audio setups all across the board, but for me it's harder to hear in Dolby than when I have my system at 5.1, possibly since I have a rear speaker behind my head. Here's a few of the other discussions for more info/background:

Most weird since it's so prevalent, but there's no clear explanation and it continues.

Here's someone's sample of the sound, at about 2 and 7 seconds in.

are you in a location where you could watch a football game "over-the-air" from a local broadcaster ? That would help tell if it's the original network source material, or the compression present in cable/satellite/FIOS transport.

Others have reported hearing it over the air. I haven't tried myself yet.

I couldn't hear it in the YouTube clip.

With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine.

I heard it, I had to turn it all the way up,...sounded like the same sequence repeated. It wasn't very "invasive", wrt the remainder of the soundtrack. There is so much floating around out there these days,...who knows. When push to talk Motorola's first came out, I could hear data pulses, sync,..whatever, over my PC speakers. I hear those in the background in various situations,...been a whole, but those were prominent for a time. I no longer use push to talk,...retired

It reminds me ghost objects I saw, when I used infrared camera first time. They look and behave like flies, but you couldn't see anything with naked eye. Many described them, but no one gave ultimate explanation.

YUP! that's the sound I've been hearing to. I've been hearing it for a while, and I haven't bothered to ask anyone else about it for fear that maybe I was just going insane. It doesn't really bug me or anything, it's just strange. Glad I'm not the only one.

Most likely it is the SMPTE time code signal leaking into the audio path. This signal is used to sync up all the various network data signals with a frame by frame count.

Unlikely. LTC (SMPTE Longitudinal Time Code, or Linear Time Code) is not as likely to "leak" into audio these days as it once was in I've events, partly because it's not necessary to distribute it because of other sync methods, and partly because at lease some of the crosstalk mechanisms themselves have been eliminated. Also, LTC is a continuous signal, not intermittent bursts. It's a continuous "scream", which doesn't match your description.
