Will be installing a home theater system in my house. First HDTV and want a good surround sound experience. Doesn't have to be the best, or absolutely cutting edge, just enjoyable.

Had an audio/visual guy come to my house and give me an estimate. Here is what he recommended:
-4 Bookshelf speakers: $140 each.
-Central speaker: $200
-Subwoofer: $400
-Amplifier: $200

My question is, which of these components are the important ones. And what do you think of these prices for each component?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

To answer your question. All of the components are important. Don't have an installer do the work or sell you the gear. Your going to overpay. He's a little high on the bookshelf speakers and the center channel for an intro system. You can get a nice subwoofer for the price he quoted but you can get nice subs for even cheaper through ID companies. In my opinion he's low on the $200 receiver/AVR. You're going to spend a few more dollars on a receiver.

Forgot to mention,

Audio Receiver - $600.

So total is about $1500. If I am spending about $3K on a HDTV, how much should the audio system be? I see those boxed home theater sets for less than $500. Are those really that much inferior?

Thanks.

I would go with a boxed HT set as an intro set. After a few years when the desire to upgrade hits you can consider a more serious component purchase.

Figure out what your budget is FIRST.

There can be a huge difference between a $500 system and a $2,000 one.

Subs 100-500.
AVR 200-600 depending on what you really need.
Speakers for Movies 25-300 each.

You can get a HTIB that has really basic everything.

Go and hear speakers if you can. They make the most difference.

Good Luck!

I would advise that you don't start with a HTIB. It's a waste of money in the long run. The performance from these HTIB systems is much lower then a hand built or pieced together system. Even a budget pieced together system will put a HTIB to shame.

+1

However, I am confused about the setup you describe. An amplifier and a receiver? Could you share the make and models of the different components you are getting? For instance, if he's selling you a separate amplifier for a passive subwoofer, that's probably not good choice. The most highly recommended subs on AVS for $600 have built in amplifiers.

I would let people here vet what he is selling you before signing anything. You might not be getting a good deal. And without the make and model, it's impossible to comment further.
