The sub has a phase button and I have tried switching it, but then I got a lot less bass.

What AVR mode are you playing music with?

When I use Analog Direct or 2 channel stereo my subwoofer does not engage. The EQ circuit (not talking Audyssey) does not work with analog direct, but it does work with 2 channel stereo.

I have to use auto select for 2.1 (AKA subwoofer engaged along with bass management) .

I have to use any of the matrix decoders (like PL-2) to get 5.1 from 2.0 material.

Phase buttons are pretty crude tools compared to the time delay options that many AVRs have.

Have you done any reliable acoustic measurements on this system, say with a measurement microphone, and software tools like Room Eq Wizard (freeware)?

I assume he meant the polarity switch. That switch is marked as phase on many subwoofer amplifiers.

No I haven't. I didn't realize that there is free software to do this, I will definitely try this.

And yes, the phase button is probably just polarity.
