We're renovating our basement and so I have the opportunity to hide wires and such. But the thing is the room is an odd shape, and the TV sits in a corner. I had 5.1 set up before but the speakers are all different distances from the couch, and different heights! I use a receiver to power and tune the speakers but it's never been great.

The room image is below. You'll see the TV in the bottom left corner (51" though I'll upgrade soon).

1. Any suggestions on speaker placement?
2. Is a sound bar or surround bar the way to go here?

Thanks in advance!

In this situation, using a sound bar for the LCRs might be the way to go. So then you still have the surrounds.
Putting the RS @ the edge of the stairwell, and the LS @ the opposite wall (lower right corner of drawing).
Then reposition the sofa so the center of the seat is equal distance to both.

What about moving the tv to the right wall? Theres a bit of a rectangle formed on the bottom half of the room where you could place speakers more theater-like.

We've considered moving the TV to the right side of the room. But thats a fireplace on the left side and it seemed weird to have the fireplace on one end and the TV on the other. I'm considering a new TV and mounting it above that fireplace thus giving me a more rectangular layout.

Are sound bars worth it?
