Hi everyone,

My current FOH setup is roughly 250' from the stage. I have an analog console and like the idea of a digital snake. Does anyone know of a product that has analog input box on the stage Taft out puts cat5. Then at FOH, the cat5 gets turned back around to analog and I can patch from the box to my board. I know Roland makes s system like this but any other ideas? Thanks!

you know it's not just a snake, right? Separate AD channels for each input to the snake, separate DA channels for each output from the snake . . . . I think the Dead's sound guy implemented something like that 20 years ago or something, but they had some bucks to play with.

all of which is to say, IDK. Might try Mixonline or similar pro sound sources, although there are a few pretty savvy live sound folks around here. but I'm not sure it gains you anything but expense and more stuff to go wrong.

There are many digital stage boxes/"snakes available, they're all expensive.
Behringer might have something cheap though.
I'm considering using ADAT over coax for some 4-wire intercom trunks on an upcoming show, there's some cheap stuff out there.

Spooling out 250' of cat5 sure beats 250' of thick analog cable in my books. Checkout the Roland s4000 or s1608.

Digital snakes are becoming very popular, but be prepared to exercise your checkbook!

The lowest cost system I am aware of is the AudioRail:

Beyond that life seems to begin in the 4 figures and extend well into 5.

Digital snakes seem to work best if incorporerated into the design of the console, and of course that console needs to be fully digital. Here is one mature but highly regarded system:

http://www.roland.com/products/en/M-400/

You can check out some prices here:

http://www.sweetwater.com/c126--Roland--Digital_Mixers

The prices look reasonable but they are for fairly small systems.

The key problem is that in order to effectively drive the digital line, the mic preamps need to be located near the performers. People often change the gain of mic preamps at will, so some means for remotely controlling the gain of the mic preamps needs to be part of the system or there will be a certain amount of running back and forth.

The Roland system is the one I've been checking out. I already plan to order an Allen & Heath GLD with digital snake but I also would like to use my analog console and my snake now is in dire need of replacement!

So if the mic pres are stage side, instead if adjusting the gain at FOH I would adjust them remotely with that add on? Is that correct?

Yes.

Most people lose a lot of interest in analog consoles after they get comfortable with a good digital console.
