Ok, here's what you do:
1. Give the wife your creditcard and send her out a few hours.
2. Read this thread and try the tips you already have. They don't have to look pretty (the wife is out, remember?)
3. Realize the room acoustics are messing you up.
4. Sob quietly in a corner.
Seriously, getting great results with the current setup will be difficult, but it would be nice to confirm it by actually trying a better setup. Maybe that will motivate you to try to nudge the wife in the right direction, designwise. Maybe try to involve her instead? "Honey, how can we make the speakers stay like that, AND make it look good too?". Involve her in the process, maybe she'll be more understanding in the end?
