With our family room's 55" TV setup, our 2 front speakers are only about 6' apart. Is a center channel speaker really necessary for a 6' span? Thanks for your opinions.

I recently went to my brother's place over the holidaze and he has two good size full range towers on either side of his 55" tv. During movies I thought the lack of a center for dialog on a movie I had already seen on my own system was noticeable. Some say that close together like that the phantom thing works well for them. You can always try and add a center later. What about a sub? smile.gif

Agree with this. Phantom center mode can work well with the proviso that the listener sits in the sweet spot centered between the L & R speakers. If sitting off center or if many are sitting around the tv, a center speaker will anchor and more cleanly reproduce the intended front soundstage, esp. when one uses an avr capable of processing multichannel sound.
