I have an older high end stereo system that only accepts RCA cabled input. I want to digitally record my CDs, store them on a high capacity storage device along with downloaded music files, connect that device to my system and control the playback using my iPhone.
Is there such a device? I essentially want to replace the 300 CD changer currently connected to the system.

Thanks.

You are going to need a Digital to Analog Audio Converter via USB. A la http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=180-998

However, I don't know how you wold interface with the digital media.

Certainly possible. One obvious route is a PC (computer) connected to your stereo. There are many options and hardware choices depending on whether you'd prefer to simply connect an existing computer you use, or buy/build a dedicated machine and if so what other tasks might you want it to handle (serving video as well as music, pictures, other household desktop computing tasks, central household file server...?). There are also many software options from free to not cheap, from dedicated music only to all purpose music/movie/picture warehouse and streamer/player.

SImplest would be a Sonos or (now discontinued) SqueezerBox Touch system.

This is a question in a similar vein. I just noticed that all new DVD and blu-ray players include a USB connection in the front. Is there any way to play music files on my PC through a USB out into a DVD/Blue ray and then into my stereo?

Aren't there AVRs that provide similar facilites either via USB or via network connection and DLNA?

Yes but, so far, their GUIs are quite limited and it is hard to manage large music collections.

+1 on Squeezebox Touch recommendation. I used the same setup for years (first with Roku then Squeezebox classic). It's easy, relatively economical and offers more flexibility than most alternatives.

The problem is that there are two types of USB connections and they are not clearly marked. The USB connections on PCs and Blu Ray players present a host interface. Flash and external hard drives present a mass storage interface. One of each is required for a working connection.
