Hi all,

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and make suggestions ... It's much appreciated.

We've purchased a new house, and for the first time have a 'finished basement'. In other words, finally have a theatre room!

I've done some research, but it's overwhelming even for a guy that thought he had some knowledge in this area before he got started. wink.gif

Here's what I'm looking for:

  • This system will be mostly used for home theater. Most music listening won't happen in the basement.
  • I don't care if it's a 3 channel setup, 3.1, 5.1, etc ... However my money is best spent to get started.
  • Less than $2000. Much less is even better. If I can use anything that I have, or tell me I can sell it because it's junk ... That will also help.
  • I'll get the room dimensions tomorrow, but I'd guess it's 15x20.
  • It's a townhouse, so I don't need LOUD ... I just want quality.
  • I'm located on the East Coast of Canada. FYI for shopping purposes.
  • Already have 60" Samsung Plasma & Blueray in the basement.

Let me know what other information I can supply to facilitate the setup!

This is the gear I currently have in the house, that I can incorporate in to this setup. Would love to know what you think of this gear ... May just use it on the main floor, or replace. Thank you!

x Paradigm PDR-12 Subwoofer
x Klipsch F1 Towers
x PSB Century 300i bookshelves

The obvious comparison would be for:

2 Primus 363 - $400
1 Primus 251 - $200
2 Primus 163 - $200

$800 and larger drivers at most location, 3-way fronts versus $600.

The big problem - no subwoofer.

I would go for the Klipsch Reference towers on sale at Futureshop for $699 buy one get one free, buy the matching center, and then use your F1s for rears and the PDR-12 for your sub. That would give you a nice HT setup smile.gif

Thank you!!

I actually went and looked at the Klipsch Reference Towers yesterday. Would I be better off with the RF800B instead of the 600B. There is only $100 in the difference, and both are eligible for buy one get one free.

The RC500B is the center you're talking about? If so, it's also on sale for $299, save $150!

Would I be shorting myself, using the F1's as rears, or is it a 'good' option?? The RS400B's are on for $174 per speaker, save $155 per speaker at Futureshop. Should I make the jump and sell the F1's, or are the F1's just as good of an option?

The PDR Sub is from the late 90's I'd assume? I wasn't sure it would still be relevant? I just wanted to make sure you were aware it wasn't a 'late model' 12" paradigm. Still worth using?

I REALLY appreciate all of this help. I'm excited to make the purchase ASAP, so I'll watch for the reply.

Zach.

There's a Klipsch owners thread on AVS, and they can answer your questions about Klipsch far better than I can: http://www.avsforum.com/t/680426/klipsch-owner-thread

As far as subs. Sure. Subs have improved. The problem is that you might have to spend a lot to do better. Sub prices in Canada are not good. Lot of people here in the US like the Internet direct subwoofer vendors. Great values on subs. One of those vendors, SVS Sound, has a distributor in Canada:

http://www.sonicboomaudio.com/

I would think you'd want to get the SVS PB12-NSD to have a much better sub. That's a lot of money.

So start with your speakers, and then talk to the guys in the AVS subwoofer forum about a new sub. Be sure to let them know you are in Canada.
