Last week i saw hangover 3 at the largest cinema in Malta which seats over 700 people and is the only cinema in Malta to be equipped with full T.H.X approved sound.

I saw all the side and rear speakers , but for the fronts and sub, they must be behind the screen or something.

I was wondering , how big are the fronts for a cinema like this ? And what sub ?

They are HUGE (especially the subwoofers).

They need to be for such a large space.

JBL are one of the major players in the cinema market. Have a look at some of their offerings, and a brief on how to specify.

no room gain in a commercial theater so lots more power and lots more driver surface area/excursion needed to achieve higher SPLs at lower frequencies. IIRC

As I understand it, you can't get the pressure effects that many here enjoy in a room where the dimensions exceed the relevant wavelengths. Note not everybody desires this (IIRC Mark Seaton doesn't setup to achieve this effect when left to his own devices.)

The primary reasons of the disparity;
Displacement of the LF system relative to the cubic volume of the room, relative distance of the listeners, and various acoustic gains inherent to the smaller space.

When examining the subwoofer spectrum, what's attainable in the home, compared to an acoustically large space of a theater, is enormous. Additionally, we design our systems to cover the full spectrum of the recorded content, all the way down into the infra-sonic. That can require mammoth amounts of displacement capability. Whereas movie theater subwoofers typically only cover down to around 30hz, then rolling off from there.

Although I've not thought of it this way, my sub system covering a theater's typical bandwidth, would likely be an adequate performer in a theater. I've got (4)18"s and (4)15"s, in a modestly sized 25'x13'x8' family room. My point being, 8 high power subs, high passed around 25hz-30hz, would cover the room. There's other factors too, but keeping it simple.
