There's a chap on forum in my country who has just brought some $180,000 Focal Grande Utopia's and his wife won't allow him to move the furniture around. In fact he said he was lucky that he was allowed to put the speakers where they are.

I just don't get it...??? With that kind of money to throw at speakers, surely someone could afford to buy a house that would give them a big room to do what they wanted with it...???

That's because there's money to be made. biggrin.gif Why sell him on something that doesn't cost anywhere as much (or is free) such as room treatments, placement, acoustics, when you can sell them on placebo?

From a dealer's viewpoint, its all about costs and benefits. All of the devices you've just mentioned have trivial installation procedures and skills for best results, given that best results are trivial changes to sound quality. From a dealer standpoint they are ideal, because it is very hard to ruin or even change a system's sound with snake oil nostrums.

All one has to do is follow the threads about acoustics and measurement software here at AVS to realize that their installation and usage involves non-trivial procedures and skills and involve a risk of actually changing system sound quality. We also know that anything that actually changes the sound quality of an audio system has considerable risk of buyer's remorse.

We now know that there is at least a 30-40% chance that a placebo will create the perception of a benefit in the "patient" as determined by a skilled professional. In the case of home hi fi, the determination is made by a person no special skills and with a considerable investment in a positive outcome. We already know that the perception of benefit becomes then very high - probably 80% or more.

Its all about costs and benefits as seen from the dealer perspective.

My response was tongue in cheek. I realize it's difficult to convey intent, just as I can't discern whether your response was for other's benefit, or you thought I didn't know of what you speak.

I think he was just making a valid point that your typical hifi salesman wouldn't know much about room acoustics anyhow. Telling their customer that they probably need better cables is not only the money making way out, but also the easy way out. It's a win win for them.

Don't take what I said as applying to you or being for your education. I mostly post for the lurkers. I know who you are, and I mean that in a good way.

Jim,
thanks for posting the pictures. Nice to see how others setup their listening spaces. Only change I would make is to replace that chair with an Eames..

My wife tolerates my audio gear. I know if I would start adding room treatments,me knowing how important that is, she wouldn't want that stuff all over the walls. I just deal with it, keep the peace. smile.gif

Well - I never heard difference in cables or any other tweeko AudioPhool nonsense - speakers and room acoustics is where it’s at - the room is mine.

I'm a serious listener and I think I've spent no more than 10% of those luxurious systems. I know some people whose gear is even more humble than mine and sounds great!

I consider myself as serious a listener as they come.

No, my room doesn't look as pretty as some others. But $1000 worth of DIY room treatment and I find the resulting sound stunning.

The question many seem to be mulling over is if you had six figures to spend on a room, would you? Or is it over the top or wrong in some way to do so?

If the question instead is do you have to, to get great sound, I would say NOT.

I don't get why one has to spend well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars in order to be considered a serious listener.

You don't.

Additionally, how good a room looks doesn't mean a thing to how it sounds. It would more convincing if you had a stat sheet for each room with FR, ETC and Waterfalls posted.
