I recently purchased a house that has 4 in-ceiling speakers. I was wondering what equipment do I need to setup the surround sound home theater. I know at a minimum I would need the receiver. What else do I need? Subwoofer? center speaker? soundbar?

I would not recommend a "front speaker" setup with the left and right front speakers in the ceiling and the center channel down at listener level. The in-ceiling units are down firing at the floor and the center would be a stand alone horizontal firing speaker aimed at the listener......not a good setup. I also am not a fan of soundbars and their pseudo surround sound effects.

My suggestion for your consideration is to ignore the front 2 in-ceiling units, buy the "front 3" as stand alone speakers and only use the two back in-ceiling speakers for surround effects.

You will also need a powered subwoofer to complete the setup with an a/v receiver.

Instead of the "front 3", can I just do a "front 1" as the stand alone center speaker and then a subwoofer with the a/v receiver? If yes, where do I get this kind of setup. In most cases the "packages" come with all the speakers. And I think buying the sub and center speaker and the a/v receiver each separately is going to be more expensive then buying the "package" that has the receiver, sub and 5 speakers?

The big question is what you intend to use the speakers for, and where they are.

Do you want them to be the whole system?

Do want this system to sound like a conventional home theater system?

Speakers will be in the living room connected to the TV. I do want a setup like a conventional home theater system with surround sound.
