I'm setting up my first surround system ever.

So googled and I had a look at this:

http://www.dolby.com/us/en/consumer/setup/connection-guide/home-theater-speaker-guide/index.html?utm_campaign=ce-ht&utm_medium=multi&utm_source=multi&utm_content=ce-ht-sym-speakersetup

And my room is way too small, my seating position is against the back wall.

1) should the sides be to the left and right of the seating position still in my tiny room? Or should I move them towards the front of the room like I have in the pictures below, since the room is so small?

2) should the rears face forward behind the couch, or would they be better lying on the floor pointing up, or above the couch pointing down? Right now they are just resting on the couch. I just unboxed everything tonight so this is not where everything is staying.

3) I want to figure this out so I can mount everything to the walls and hide the wires in the walls this weekend.

Here are pics of the sides and rears to give an idea:

Mount them on the side walls, in the back corner of the room, at least a couple of feet above ear height.

Thank you

So then I leave out the sides and just go for 5.1 correct?

If you look at the link you posted in the first post, you'll see that 5.1 is with sides while 7.1 is with sides & backs. So if you're doing 5.1, then you leave out the backs (use the "surround" connection on your receiver, not the "surround-back" connection).

Excellent. Thank you for that!
I think this room is better suited for 5.1 now that all the speakers are here.
I guess bigger is not always better!

Thank you.

5.1 vs 7.1 is determined more by seating location than the room. If you're sitting a few feet away from the back wall, then you're a candidate for a 7.1-speaker layout. But if your seating is at or near the back wall, then better to stick to 5.1 (no space behind you for the back speakers).

Got it.

I could have saved some $$ on a 5.1 receiver and speakers biggrin.gif
OH well, maybe I can use the speakers in a second zone in another room for airplay or something.

Have a great day,

Jason

Just make sure you point them at your ears.Sit in your sweet spot and have someone hold a small mirror over the speaker face and turn your head looking at the mirror, when you see your face in the middle of the mirror you know that the speakers are pointed directly at your head and ears. You can do the same with the front speakers.Hold a mirror flat against them and then position them so you can see yourself.Have fun biggrin.gif

So I am keeping 7.1 but I'm doing it like this! My receiver can do height speakers so I'm stoked again smile.gif
