Safe to screw into speaker?

I have another post here:

Need to wall mount bookshelf speakers?

But this is the cliff notes version. I am on a tight budget and I have some Yamaha bookshelf speakers without any mounting holes that I want to use for a 5.1 setup. Is it safe to screw the mount directly into the back of the speaker?

If it matters the speakers are Yamaha NS-AM380S speakers:

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Yes, if you're careful, use short screws. Don't go all the way through the wood/mdf/plastic.

There's a crossover in there somewhere, probably near the speaker terminals, maybe attached to the bottom, you don't want to run a drill or a screw through that.

Lay the speaker on its back, put something pointy (bamboo cooking skewer or similar) gently through the port and see if you can judge the thickness of the back panel.

Maybe you can see into the port to see if something is in the way, or where the crossover is located.

Maybe there are some mounting marks on the back of it already.

Just use good judgment you should be fine.

I'll be back later...

When I mounted my speakers, I removed the terminal cup to make sure everything was clear for the screws.

If you can't remove the terminal cup, remove the woofer and look inside. Sometimes the crossover hangs off the speaker if it's only one or two components.
