If you read my old post, it seems like there is very little bass coming from my speakers when they are set to large (even though I did say I had a sub). Am I right to assume that even though I said there is a sub in my setup (which I very rarely use), as long as the speakers are set to large, there will be no redirection of bass anywhere correct?
I am listening to the music in stereo mode. However, I'm still unsure about "direct" mode.
Am I doing something wrong? I find it hard to beleive that a newer mid range Denon sounds this much worse than my H/K AVR 525.
Anyway, any suggestions would be appreciated
Cheers

Direct Mode, at least for Marantz, bypasses your DSP. For me, that means it will not utilize the subwoofer, it sends the full range signal straight from the source to the amp. If I want more bass than the speakers will provide, I need to use "Stereo" mode, which will use the DSP, including the Audessey settings and bass management, so the subwoofers will be active.
But if the speakers are set to large, then it should not send any info to the sub right, regardless of what DSP is chosen or not? I usually keep the sub off and my mains to LARGE when listening to music. Doing this on this denon just seems underwhelming, so I'm hoping I have missed something.
In the X4200W setup menu there is a setting for 2CH playback. I believe the 2CH menu can be found under the Speakers menu. In the 2CH menu it should be set to auto, but if you change it you should be able to make sure all bass is going to your speakers. Hopefully this is helpful.
If you want your mains to run full range and have output from your sub, you are looking for a setting called "Extra Bass" or something along those lines. I think, but I'm not sure, that even when using extra bass (on my Yamaha, at least) direct mode will output only to the mains, whereas stereo will output to the sub.
But will stereo still output to the sub if you have your front speakers set to large? I wouldn't think so. At least I hope not lol. It wouldn't make sense if it did - why give the LARGE option if that were the case?
Well,
I just read an older post about denon lack of bass.
THey said to turn the DYNAMIC EQ off and then go into PARAMETERS and then TONE. Here bass and treble can be adjusted.
So, this might be the fix. I did have the DYNAMIC EQ ON
An aside, my old receiver never had HDMI inputs so the video was directly between blu ray player and TV via HDMI. Now that everything is going into the receiver, I am finding the video quality much poorer.
Any thoughts on this at all? Is there a way I can get the BR player to completely passthrough the video to the TV without altering it?
Have you run Audyssey on the Denon??
What speakers are you using?
How big is your room and how far do you sit from the speakers?
Nothing else changed besides the AVR (speaker position, MLP position, room, etc)?
Just out of curiosity, when you turn DEQ off, go into that same place in the Audio Menu, and turn off Audyssey as well. Then, while listening to the same music, and with DEQ off, turn Audyssey on and off a few times. If the bass doesn't change when you turn Audyssey off, at least we will know that Audyssey isn't the culprit.
As a note, DEQ actually boosts the bass slightly, in all the channels, at below Reference volumes. That's why it's important to keep DEQ off when you compare Audyssey on and Audyssey off.
You pretty much nailed it. Before I saw your post, I basically turned off the audyssey calibration settings and pumped up a bit of the bass with the tone feature. BINGO! BASS!
Running that audessy pretty nearly wiped the bass from my front speakers.
Mind you, I'm still learning and when I did the setup, I did use my sub. If I rarely plan to use my sub at this point, should I re run audessy with just the 7 speakers?
I'm finding that I watching shows at-10db on the master volume, which seems high to me.
Thanks all for taking the time to help!
Double check your volume, x-over and phase settings on the sub.
