Bi-amped System Crossover Tweaking with TrueRTA

I’m a newbie to software like TrueRTA. The manual for my two-way active crossover says that though crossovers can and should be adjusted by ear, by also using a mic, preamp and software, one can generate graphics that will help get the task done a lot faster.

I can't upload what I want in a permissible format/size, so please see the summed FR and phase responses for the 3 pole filters on p. 8 here http://www.firstwatt.com/pdf/prod_b4_man.pdf . I refer to the 3 pole filters are for clarity. I’ll be hoping to get away with using 2 pole filters at most.

I need to learn how to measure and display the frequency response and phase response of the HP and LP filters-and their summed responses-of the chosen type, slope and Fc of the two crossovers.

Would someone here care to describe their own step by step procedure for doing this-presumably using TrueRTA’s dual trace oscilloscope and an omnidirectional mic and preamp?

Since this thread began 10 years ago (!), I'm seeking some "current state of the art" opinions.

What I want to do is spectrum analysis of my car audio system. I'm not wanting to do SPL. Looking over the the thread and other info, it seems like the Beringer ECM8000 mic is still a good choice, but I need the connection between it and the laptop that I'm going to use for TrueRTA. I look at some of the options on Amazon and I worry about the negative comments regarding sound quality, but I don't know how much these will affect what I'm trying to do.

This gear will be single purpose for me; I'm not looking to use it for anything else, so mixing, additional inputs and the like are not a factor. I'm not wanting to spend over $100 for the gear (assume that the mic, laptop and TrueRTA software are givens, not included in the spend total).

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

To answer your mic question: I'm using a five year old calibrated mic that came with my GoldLine 1/12th (low) 1/3rd (elsewhere) RTA

Had to replace the M-Audio FastTrack with a MobilePre. Salesman that pitched the FastTrack said they were "identical, except FastTrack was single channel rather than two channel". He was right, IF you ignore the phantom power differences!
Oops!

Hi Brad,

Check this out - I have used this with True RTA and the ECM8000... worked great!

Very high quality! Lab grade in fact...

Hi Garity, not to sound ungrateful, but I believe this item runs afoul of the "not wanting to spend over $100" and "current state of the art" clauses of my post. The cheapest I can find is an eBay auction that's over $250, and it looks like a 8 year old device.

My bad - sorry. When I bought mine about 8-years ago, it was $149.00, so I assumed it be under $100.00 used. Sorry to have wasted your time. If I still had mine i would sell it to you for $100.00 to make up for my misdirection.
