No. The 717 preamp outputs feed the 360. The 360 drives only speakers.

Yes. the results in the 4 "new" surrounds will be the same as if you decoded them with conventional PLIIx (5.1 to 7.1 processing) in the main unit.

one thing I missed was I have two subs can they stay with the 717 or should I send one to the 360?

The subs have to remain driven from the 717. Only the surround channels are passing through the 360.

In fact, you should set the bass management in the 717 same as you did originally (probably Ls/Rs = small).
