Major TiVo Announcement Coming March 2

It's been almost three years since TiVo last introduced a new, stand-alone DVR but today the company announced that it will hold a press conference on March 2 to debut what they have in store for the future. Tivo sent out the announcement with the words Inventing the DVR was just a warmup, so clearly they think this going to be a big deal. Whether the world agrees is yet to be seen but images of a TiVo Premiere have surfaced and a newly revamped menu system are expected but with such a big claim they certainly have got a lot of people speculating.

Good. I hope they have some nifty new thing coming that I'll see in MythTV eventually. If it's something I already have I'll be mad.

I bet it's something crappy like Netflix / Blockbuster integration or something. Wonder whether they'll claim they invented that, too? Does Al Gore work for TiVo now?

Maybe they will include a video chip to improve the terrible cable and satellite broadcasts. That would be something that would sell like crazy as many have to suffer through cable/sat compression which can make HD not watchable. Thankfully I have FiOS and I don't have to deal with Comcast anymore.

Please let it be a UI refresh that isn't slow! I'm on the HD XL and the load screens are silly in this day in age!

Well there is always that "HULU" rumor or maybe Tiversity or PlayOn will be getting an interesting Tivo neighbor.

"Bring out yer dead!".."Wait I'm not dead yet!"..(Sound Austrian here) "WRONG !!" (You know what happens next..)

TIVorrent allows you to download any content from other TIVO users that you would have access to through your provider after the fact.

Seemless watch TIVO in Win7 MCE, or TIVO programs on your Windows Media Center.

Hulu Premium is included as part of your subscription.

I'll take three please.

Well, netflix for quite some time anyway (very late 2008 IIRC). Blockbuster just got added within the last year.

will probably besomething that will work as a media server...and have a bunch of widgets and crap that are redundant to features that come on almost all new tv's, game consoles and bluray players.

Upscaling would be nice to have since alot of my cable comes in 480i still.

I would like a Tivo box that would have all of the widgets and streaming capability in addition to being a great PVR. Tivo's slow UI and current features make it a clunky media extender at best (the current NetFlix functionality being a notable exception). I personally don't like all of the widget and streaming capability being put into my LCD, receiver and blu-ray player. I would rather those devices just focus on delivering great picture and sound. I can't wait for the announcement!

With all the over hype that has been going on the the tech realm in the recent past I hope this isnt as well. Tivo does seem to back up their claims in the past though.

My bro was going to upgrade his Directv receivers this year and the install guy said they have been pushing back the release of the new Directv Tivo units(supposed to be out winter 09) for some reason though he did mention there is going to be a receiver that can record off of 4 channels at the same time didn't say for sure if it is the tivo units or not.... Maybe that's what it is

He told my bro to hold out awhile longer.

I would have to think two-way CC support is one of the first major things they would roll out. But I hope they don't stick to strictly TV like features.

I think Tivo has to realize that if they are going to appeal to the average user as a $300 replacement to their cable provided DVR, that they have to branch more into streaming media. Their main competition in the future has to come from the $150 streaming boxes like the Roku, Boxee, and Popcorn Hour.

I'd love to see them add local LAN (SMB/CIFS) streaming of MPEG4 media as well premium partnerships with the major networks. The Youtube thing is nice when you want to find a quick clip but the quality is awful and the Netflix interface is horribly and slow. I typically use my 360 for Netflix content. So of course, as everyone mentioned, a speedier/redesigned UI would be nice too.

I love my two Tivo's and have lifetime but if I can get the all the content from some other internet source without cable, I would have to drop them. This is why I hope they smell the coffee and bolster their streaming efforts more. We'll find out tonight.

Oh, and almost forgot. They have to fix streaming from Amazon. If you go to their site via the webpage you can start watching instantly and stream. If you rent a movie on the Tivo, you sometimes have to wait 1/2 hour to an hour for it to download enough depending on your internet speed.

Does it work well with the cable card? Anybody has it yet?

Too bad they stiffed current TiVo HD subscribers by not providing an upgrade path to the new GUI, nor additional online features. Also, Premier touts 1080p, but the TiVo HD boxes apparently DO have 1080p capability (look close at the front panel Format lights to see the "1080p" indicator), yet haven't mentioned anything about TiVo HD handling 1080p, and are in fact distinguishing Premier from the old HD by specifically noting 1080p only in the Premier feature list.

TiVo is offering current HD owners a "special" upgrade to Premier price of half off the $400 Lifetime subscription, but NO discount on the box itself. NO transfers of existing Lifetime service agreement from TiVo HD to Premier either.

This is only if you already have a TiVo HD with Lifetime, and you keep the TiVo, so it's not much of an "upgrade", more of a "loyalty" discount. If you had a THD without lifetime, then you got 20% off the hardware. So, you are no worse off getting an additional $100 off the MSD price for lifetime ($199 vs. $299) than getting at best $100 off the hardware (only with the XL). You might make a case about being railroaded into the lifetime option, but the TCO is working out in your favor.
