First Ever Rankings Of 3d Performance Show Plasmas Offer More Realistic Images Than LCDs

In its first-ever ranking of 3D performance, Consumer Reports evaluated 14 3D TV models and found that plasma TVs are better at displaying 3D images than LCD sets, primarily because they exhibit less ghosting, or double images that appear even when wearing 3D glasses. Three plasma models from Panasonic exhibited the best 3D picture quality and the least ghosting of all the sets tested. The report appears in the December Annual Electronics issue and online at www.ConsumerReports.org. It remains to be seen whether 3D TV is just a novelty or a new product category in the consumer electronics space, said Paul Reynolds, electronics editor for Consumer Reports. But, our tests show that there are some fine 3D TV sets out there for those consumers eager for a new experience.

Cool post. After demoing almost all of the 3D panels available, I have concluded that plasmas far outperforms LCDs in the ability to display 3D without crosstalk and off axis viewing.

Too bad this was discovered a year or so after many manufacturers killed their plasma lines.

Well, they said they tested 3DTVs from all current manufacturers, but they didn't test any of the DLPs from Mits. What's up with that? Especially since most believe that DLPs offer the best 3D.

Currently testing 3D with Sammy DLP, shutter glasses, and HTPC

Do DLP sets even deliver full 1080p to each eye? I thought they do checkerboard format only?

Having tested both Mits DLP *82" Model WD82838 and the Panasonic 54" VT25 side by side using two identical PS3 units feeding the exact same source, I must tell you that the Panasonic exibited much better clarity, no ghosting and a sterling picture. I'm still not convinced that this the the market of the future but for now it is a very nice novelty.
