As many of you know, AVS Forum will soon debut a newly redesigned site and one of the many new features is that every member will have an avatar.
This means that all members who don't currently have one will have a stock avatar at launch. It's that stock avatar that we'd like your help designing.
So this is your chance to have your work as part of the new AVSF style and win the admiration of others with the use of your avatar design as the AVSF default!
So designers, think theater curtains, film reels, speaker cones, etc. Whatever your imagination can come up with!
Remember, as a member you will of course be able to change your avatar to something else, or even a blank image if you prefer that sheek minimalist look, but those who never upload their own, will have this image. You'll also be able to hide all avatars if that's your preference.
Depending on the number of submissions, the staff will either choose a winner or narrow it down to a manageable number for a community vote. The best part is, even if your image is not chosen as the default, folks may just love it enough to pluck it from this thread and use it as their own!
As for the specs... Avatars will display on your profile page at 175X175 and scale down to 80X80 in posts so let's submit them here at 175 in either .png, .gif, or .jpg file types. All submissions must be your own copyright free work and should not have "AVS" in the image as that will be reserved to easily identify staff members. No animated avatars will be used.
When will this end? Not sure yet. Let's see how it progresses. But we hope to put up a selection by months end for voting.

has a preview of the new design/site ever been posted. wondering about the theme.
note: the post above is my opinion. as such, when reading any recommendations from me, please do you research and seek out other recommendations and make up your own mind on your next course of action. i mean, most reasonable adults should know that, but it seems this should be stated anyways.
I do not have them but could suggest them
1, how about a dog with some large speakers on his ears; basshead
2, a cat with ear phones on; cool cat
3, don't forget Marty from "back to the future," in front of a 8' speaker with guitar in hand; loud'nuf
as for the first one the thought came to mind of the dog with speakers standing in front
of the old RCA Victrola megaphone...
Thanks djdcm0722, chirpie and petew. The welcome text is just a place holder and could say whatever. I updated the more popular (and my favorite) avatar with generic member text to give an idea of how it could also look. I will probably put up some more options today.
Sorry, I disagree. You have to view these avatars at 80 px x 80 px, which is what will be used. The text is unreadable at that resolution.
When previewing, don't assume that the avatars will look as good at 80 px x 80 px as they do at 175 px x 175 px.
Digital images work with the same sampling theory as video and audio processing - artifacts and compression effects are part of the image scaling process. IOW, it can get totally hosed if not done correctly. The judging should be done at 80 px x 80 px.
If this is to be the default avatar, its going to show up a zillion times in each sub forum and in each thread for all the people that never bother to choose an individual personalized avatar.
Maybe instead of something bright and flashy and overwhelming colorful or flashly maybe it should be something more subdued and elegant that would more blend in or not be distracting so that those more active members that have a personalized vatar and want to stand out can do so.
Or the posts of epic wisdom from more active members with personalized avatars could be more highlighted and stand out from the guys that went with the system generated default avatar?
I mean if the chosen default avatar is cartoonish or colorful instead of subdued it could be distracting by itself right?
Something along the lines of these submissions I would not mind being the default from multiple users in a thread as they would not be too distracting and look rather elegant. Especially the generic outline figure in the first image. Having the multiple dark red curtains on the side of the thread and a generic person icon for posters that did not choose a personal icon seems appropriate somehow to me.
Can you guys come up with more icons along those lines?
