No... Those ads were set to auto renew if not sold. As such the system keeps resetting them at the end of the run.

Sorry for the confusion on that.

After seeing some concern about loosing the dedicated app I thought I'd give my testimonial (of sorts) in regards to Tap-a-talk.. it really is a great app. for forum based mobile browsing/posting. I also frequent a sports related forum and and that's how I initially heard about Tap-a-talk.. I hesitated to purchase it ($2.99 i believe) but after fighting to read posts and post myself with the browser on my smart-phone I got the app and quickly realized how functional and streamlined it made the forum... after joining this great community I did a search on Tap-a-talk to see if AVS was accessible through it as well.. unfortunately it wasn't. So I got the AVS dedicated app, and until now I hadn't really thought about this - but I really haven't used it (AVS app) much yet I've continued to use the Tap app frequently.. I have tended to only come here with a full pc or laptop.. so for what it's worth, I welcome the ability to add AVS to my Tap-a-talk account list ( only 2 right now) and hope others will give it a try..

oh, by the way - that screen log on in the dedicated app was pretty cool.. maybe Tap-a-talk can incorporate it??

Above being addressed...

Nuts? Some people think I am. But only I know for sure.

What will you do? Not sure. Huddle in a corner until you can get your AVS fix.

Where? Not sure. Oh wait... Just Google Avsforum and read the cached copies of threads.

Awful? Well. Sure to some. But to others it can be a vacation or a needed break to actually get some work done at work or around the house. (See you know when your addicted to Avsforum when thread)

Before other site shutdowns, we usually started a thread or poll to discuss what members will do for the duration

Dave and everyone involved, I look forward to the "change". Thanks for all the hard work you guys are putting in to this process. As an IT guy myself, I know just how difficult it is to make a transfer of this scale and maintain the integrity of not only the DATA but also the "feel" of the site as well.

Also, I will miss seeing your theater on the splash screen of the AVS app Dave. I still have the AVI mag it was featured in! Still find it beautiful!

Could there be a poll to determine whether members want the forum to prevent them from editing or deleting their posts (since I for one do not want to be prevented from this)?

Also, how will this new change be compliant with the data protection, copyright and "right to be forgotten" laws?

Quote:

Multi questions is a survey and not a simple poll...so not at this time

Surely it could make some polls easier.
eg.

1. Do you want the forum to prevent you from editing your posts after a time limit of x minutes? (option 1=yes option 2=no)
2. Do you want the forum to prevent you from deleting your posts? (option 1=yes option 2=no)

/\\ and the poll results would show the percentage who wanted to be prevented from editing their posts, compared to those that don't. The same for question 2.

Instead of posting 2 separate but on the same topic polls, or a more complicated multiple choice poll that didn't give as easy to read results/percentages or wasn't as specific.

Hi Joe...

This will be a site decision that is made and currently we are on the side of thread integrity vs a rash move by a upset member. (Been their done that, not fun.) The only reason it is not like that way now is because of the special threads with the post indexes and posts keep updated. But the option is built into this software to set a timer...we just have it off base on the reason mentioned.

You example poll is two polls. You have asked TWO separate questions with separate possible answers. A survey IMHO. (Thou granted a survey usually has more questions.) We really are not a polling or survey site mind you. Nice we have what we do. Maybe someday we will write a full survey system if we think it would fit the site and the community well. I see you have started a number of polls, based on the results, or lack their of, it is not a really a big thing here unless like AVS asks the question and promotes the poll.

I can not help but notice you show your location is from the UK. You are using a US site. As such, I am not sure of what law you may be referring to as it may be something overseas. So please forgive me.

I am on a lot of community sites...I can not think of one that I use that allows editing without restriction.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Hrm. I really really like vBulletin, so I certainly have reservations about this change. Was it truly necessary? How was vBulletin proving inadequate?

Dedicated app makes it easier for me to remember to check in here on mobile devices, as opposed to firing up Tapatalk and then having to choose. That said, Tapatalk is a great little program, so it's good that it's being integrated... I just wish there was a way to keep both.

Editing timers are pretty common these days. I understand and agree with their purpose... I assume, however, that they can be overridden by a mod? So if something has good reason for needing to edit a post, it can be done by contacting a moderator?

Do threads get turned into articles after the fact? It's not uncommon for something that starts off as a regular thread to end up a long, "maintained" thread where there is a need to update the first posts. So I assume there will be a way to migrate the normal thread to the "Article" status where it can be edited indefinitely as needed? Also, and similarly, are the "article" threads corralled in a different location from regular threads, or do they get mixed in together? I like seeing threads listed normally in a forum on the subject, I'd hate to have to navigate to a separate section of the site to find those regularly-maintained threads. Or are they just listed like stickies are now, at the top of the forum?

The new site design looks great, and thanks for keeping the dark theme. Is the new code going to be smaller in footprint and maybe faster, so it places less load on your servers?

I would like to see some kind of Dashboard which can track my trends and also make it easy to see recent activity, like the 'subscribed threads' view but better. It could also give suggestions based on my habits but that's probably a much bigger change.

Another feature that would be really useful is to automatically link to useful pages when possible. e.g. when a device is mentioned in a thread, and there's an 'official' thread for it, like there is for many popular brands, then the 2 could be linked, thus providing users a link to faqs/known issues etc. It would also cut down on the number of threads and be esp useful to new users. Another part of this could be a mouseover that shows the specs of a device at a glance. Which could be turned off of course.

Looking forward to this, when does it go live?

AVSForum uses a customized vBulletin system, and it is running an older version which makes it more vulnerable to hackers. I have heard that AVS uses a custom search system, and other custom mods to make it work. Tapatalk is great, though they are able to do a dedicated app, if AVS wanted to spend the cash for it.

Great job AVS and thanks for all your hard work on this! I trust it will make the site even better!

As someone else mentioned about Audiogon, an upgrade doesn't always deliver!

The real question is can you come up with a "Hide all the coffee house chatter" option? - If I could only get back the hours of my life spent reading irrelevant posts.

As 1 of the 450, RIP Retro.

Same here. From what I could tell, VBulletin and phpBB 2/3 are the kings of discussion boards on the internet and just work the best in general.

I too would like to see the "edit post" feature. On PPCGeeks, I used to actively develop a ROM for the HTC Diamond, and usually in the ROM threads, you update your links and information in the opening post. I've edited twenty times or so, and it would've been a massive pain to the members to have to sift through an entire thread to find the latest download link.

I don't start as many threads here, but I think it could be beneficial to everyone.

Hi...

As one member put it so well..."AVSForum uses a customized vBulletin system, and it is running an older version which makes it more vulnerable to hackers. I have heard that AVS uses a custom search system, and other custom mods to make it work."

We have been on version 3.7 of Vb from that time that version came out man years ago. We have greatly modified the code and even a completely differnt search engine to keep a site this size running on Vb. The next version that could support a site this size was 3.8 but we had to many add ins to make the move vs what we would gain.

After that, IMHO and the opinion of many large forum communities (do a search), it went down hill from their. One person went to ver 4.1 and had to make over 300 changes to get his large forum to run without issues. Thus when the next version or the next comes out, you may need to redo the changes made to keep the site running. As such, we have never moved.

Because of this, we find ourselves in a position of hack attempts and have defending these as we could. We needed a solution and started to look as we dreaded, as you would, waking up one morning and finding the site gone. One thing we knew was that a widely used forum software platform attracted more spammers and hack attempts than a custom or unique one. So, well, here we are and here we go.

For me...AVSF has been a dream come try and my life blood so to speak, as such the choice was not made lightly. I would not want to see anything happen to AVS so I have to feel the right choice was made at the right time. As mentioned, it took over a year to make the choice and then we started working on conversion testing and site testing back in December 2011. At this point, we are close and doing another import test and then tests with more users of the site.

Thanks all for helping again to make this site what it is. I only hope you will continue to see AVS help drive the future of home entertainment as it always has.

Not just for AVS. But a smaller group of sites. So yes and no. But some of the code was written, or will be written, for the AVS site that will also be used on other sites in the development of the platform down the road.

Awesome news on the upcoming Tapatalk support. I actually just bought it a few minutes ago.

FWIW, the app is on sale today on the Google Play Store for 99c instead of $2.99!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...lkpro.activity

Probably won't last longer than a day or two, I noticed it was on sale on the iOS App Store a couple of days ago but is now back to $2.99.

Oddly enough, there is also a Tapatalk plugin for Chrome, though I don't know what advantages that would give you over the web version.

All I can say is soon...but a lot hinges on the next round of tests to start today or tomorrow. Could be as early as next week or the week after.

Just a quick note on this...Even with all the testing we have done, their are sure to be some issues that come up when we have thousands hitting the site doing things. We will have a place to report issues and will act on them as quickly as we can. And I mean issues vs "I do not like this color".

Thanks All.

Well, I can be counted among the few Retro theme users, and I will be sad to see it go, but what's important about this site is the content, not the colors, so I'm looking forward to the future of AVS. I'm a Blackberry user as well (man, am I good at picking the unpopular stuff ) but I've rarely used the mobile version of the site. I'm not familiar with TapaTalk, but I may check it out.
