As many of you know, the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA) Expo is an annual confab dedicated to custom installation of home theaters and other home-based electronic systems. This year, it's being held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, CO, September 25-28. Are you planning to attend?

For more info about CEDIA Expo and to register, click here.

If you are going to be there, AVS is working on a couple of events you should know about. First, we're planning a party on Friday evening, Sept. 27, from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at Jazz@Jack's, 500 16th St, #320, Denver, CO 80202; click here for the venue's website. Also, we're thinking about organizing a group tour through the exhibit hall for AVS members who would like to visit some home-theater manufacturers.

In addition to voting in the poll, please leave a comment about which companies you'd most like to visit on a booth tour.

UPDATE: Because of scheduling conflicts, we've had to cancel the booth tour. However, the party is still on, and we expect it to be a blast, so please join us!

Is it possible for the AV enthusiast to go or do you need to be an industry professional?

biliam, CEDIA is closed to the public. That being said, if you can go with an industry company, or "create your own" company, you can get in.

I'm glad to see CEDIA is finally back in my favorite location. Looking forward to it. Will be doing the AVS party as always, and I might check out this tour to see what the idea is all about.

There is no prize for registering early. Cedia exhibitors and Cedia members basically can issue free show passes to anyone they wish. So stop worrying. You will be able to get all the free show passes you want later this summer.

Sorry the code is not working. I got it directly from a Cedia.net blog:

As Mark said there will be plenty of free passes this summer. Just Google "Cedia 2013 free pass"

Apologies if this strays too far from the original topic, but I'm planning on attending CEDIA for the first time this year. I've been going to CES for about 10 years and have figured out when (for me) is the best time to arrive/depart. Can any of the CEDIA regulars advise on what days they attend?

I'm only planning on doing the exhibit floor, not the conferences (maybe next time). I know that at CES for example the normal schedule is Tuesday 10 am through Friday 4 pm but by Friday mid-day a lot of the exhibitors are packing up so I generally fly out that day. And I usually arrive late Monday night, missing the keynote but avoiding an extra day away from home.

With the CEDIA tradeshow open from Thursday 9 am to Saturday 5pm does anyone have suggestions as to when is best to attend? If I were limited to two days, for example, would Thu/Fri be the logical choice? Is Saturday (like day 4 of CES) not much worth the effort?

Sorry for the noobie question but grateful for any insights. Thanks!

If all goes according to plan, then I plan on driving out there. I have a conference in San Fran the week before that I am thinking of going to. If I do that, then I guess I will have to drop by Dr. Bill's place and see the Sony 4k.smile.gif If not, then I will fly in Wed and leave Sat or Sun.

I know Darin and his crew missed last year. I hope they have a chance to make it. I haven't asked but I would guess Itai and the Irule group will be there. Wow, I am starting to get excited.smile.gif

jbs,
I always have felt like the first day the exhibitors were trying to get into a rhythm and may not be totally up to speed. It isn't a big deal, but I have noticed it nonetheless. I didn't go to last years, so I am not sure how that Sat went. The previous year the Sat was kind of a pack up day, but not that bad compared to previous years when the last day was Sun. IIRC most exhibitors were pretty good about not packing up before the late afternoon. What is your main interest? If it is video, then you can see all of the video exhibitors in one day. If it is audio, then you will need the full two days.

I do not know Denver. Have not been there in years. Anybody have a suggestion for a restaurant? Also who is interested in getting together?

Though I've lived in the Denver Metro area for years (and lived in downtown Denver for a few years a few years ago), I'm not really current on downtown eateries near the convention center as I don't frequent the area. However I've visited downtown enough (and attended CEDIA in Denver the last time it was held here) to offer a viable prediction: Given the projected CEDIA attendance numbers, all restaurants and bars in and around the convention center are going to be packed at minimum, and jammed for hours at worst.

I live in Edgewater (the town so small its own residents often forget where it is biggrin.gif), which is 10 minutes from the convention center by car (and half that time is due to traffic and stop lights). I'll float an idea for feedback. Perhaps some of us AVS'ers can get together and grab chow at one of the few spots available in my neighborhood. The catch: Edgewater is a small, sleepy neighborhood. Thus, our group would have to be limited to ~ 10 people to not overload the local restaurants.

Transport. If you're feeling adventurous, you can try light rail/bus that can literally drop you off within a block of the Edgewater resturants. Unfortunately there is no direct link from the convention center lines to the line that runs near Edgewater. You'll have to do two transfers to catch the line that runs here. Alternatively, if you can get to Union Station (the main hub for the light rail system) you can catch the line directly and my guess would be about a 15-20 minute ride. Light rail will drop you about 1.5 miles from Edgewater. You can either catch a bus at the station that will take you straight to the neighborhood in 5 minutes, or I can come pick you up and bring you back (I drive a Prius so I'm limited to 3 people at a time).

If you have a rental car, the trip is a piece of cake. 10 minutes max, very easy directions from downtown.

Eateries: Edgewater is a very quiet, simple place (most of the time) and thus the restaurants here are anything but fancy. However, there are several places to choose from (I'll note the ones I haven't tried yet).

Edgewater Inn: Mainly known for their fresh, oven baked pizzas. I rate the quality (pizzas) as adequate (note that it's popular and probably better than average but I'm picky because I'm from NY originally and accustomed to that class of pie). Nice, simple environment. If you're really in the mood for Pizza I know a place with NY class pies another 5-7 minutes away from Edgewater.
US Thai: Decent Asian fare with, watch for it, Thai bias (coconut, spicy dishes)
Edgewater Bar: Great place for a night cap and great atmosphere (think Cheers but smaller) Decent hot sandwiches and other hot finger food. Formidable beer selection.
Sushi Place (forget true name but will check it out with enough interest-I haven't eaten there yet)
Pho Place (forget true name but will check it out with enough interest-I haven't eaten there yet)
Mexican Place (forget true name but will check it out with enough interest-I haven't eaten there yet-Appears to be a dive from the street but in my experience dives often end up having the best food)
Edgewater Resturant (forget true name but will find out and check it out with enough interest-I haven't eaten there yet) Appears to be classic American classic fare

All of these places are within 3 blocks of each other in the neighborhood.

Again, the reason I offer this as an option is because I suspect most, if not, all of the eateries near the convention center are going to be packed at dinner time. But I suspect few, if any visitors will know of Edgewater. If the interest of a getogether in Edgewater is high enough, I'll do my civic duty and check out some of the places I mentioned but haven't eaten at yet...biggrin.gif And as I stated previously, I'm more than happy to shuttle people to/from the local light rail station to the neighborhood.
