I'd like to post an invitation for non-members to join the AVS community, and I've come up with a clever way to do it—"Top Ten Reasons to Become a Member of AVS Forum," a la David Letterman's Top Ten lists. I have a list of 10 good reasons to join, but they are rather prosaic; I'd much rather post a list of humorous takes on them. So I'm asking for your help—I've come to appreciate the collective funny bone of AVS members, and I'd love your input on this.

Here are the 10 reasons to join that I've come up with (in no particular order at this point):

- Be part of a community of like-minded enthusiasts

- Make new friends

- Pontificate on something you're passionate about

- Review your gear

- Sell your gear

- Get answers to your AV questions and problems

- Help answer others' AV questions and problems

- Attend meet-ups

- Enter contests

- Get product buying advice

For example, here's a possible entry for the final list that applies to being part of a community:

When you're ready to tell your wife you want to install sound baffles on your living room ceiling, you're going to need a community behind you.

Here's one that applies to pontificating:

Who else is going to listen to you wax rhapsodic about a 30-year-old tube amp?

Note that this is different from the You know you're addicted to AVS Forum if... thread, which includes lots of great inside jokes that are meaningful mostly to those who are already members. I'm looking for something similar here, but aimed at non-members.

I'm confident that some of you can come up with funny ones related to all the reasons listed above. And if you can think of other, better reasons to join AVS than those listed here, I'm all ears. Thanks for your help!

Awe, come on Scott. I know you can do better than that.... wink.gif

Here are the real top 10 reasons to join AVS:

- Your real friends simply aren't willing to discuss comparisons of screen shots between the Dutch, UK and US versions of "Ice Castles".
- You bought Ishtar on Blu-ray because you heard it was a demo-quality video transfer.
- You're wondering if color coded jackets on video and audio cables result in any improvement in fidelity over standard black ones.
- You're hate-watching "Revolution" and you want to complain about it with like-minded individuals.
- You've decided to dump cable and you're wondering if it's a good idea to pay $8 a month for free OTA TV broadcasts to watch them on your tablet intead of your TV.
- You're seeing a lot of compression artifacts around the costant Twitter hash tag on CW TV shows and you want to know if something is wrong with your signal or your TV.
- You live in Las Vegas and want to know if the game you want to watch will be blacked out (hint: the answer is yes).
- You're tired of your spouse watching SD on your home theater system and want tips on how to make it impossible for that continue.
- You're wondering if it's worth it to suck it up and pay extra for a TiVo just to avoid having to use the Navigator interface on you cable DVR.

...and the number 1 reason:

- You don't get why any of the above might be funny, so you need to join to find out...

Here is some input, Scott:

Become part of the "1%" (of rabbid A/V enthusiasts), regardless of your net worth!

Depending on your "netiquette", you can either be met or mugged by the welcoming committee. C'mon', roll the dice!

Get your Geek on!

"Unsealed" Audio-Video files. What is it they don't want to YOU to know.
Do want to know why people who claim they don't have a TV actually have one and they don't even know it.
Learn about mysterious areas of the country that defy science, Places where over the air television and satellites will not work, yet strangely cable does. or Even weirder places where over the air television and satellites work but cable will not. You may be close to one of these areas. learn the truth and discuss with others.
Want to know why your audio system sounds worse after Fung Shui has been applied to your living room, we can help.
You've heard voodoo can bring back dead then why do people want it for movies and why can't they spell it right. VUDU?? Never fear we have answers.
You know UPS as the people who deliver packages to your door, but UPS can bring benefits to your home theater system that only a few know. Join and be one of them.
You know blu-ray discs come in a blue box and yet the discs are sliver, What is your theory, discuss it here.
Audio cables do they improve a system or it that an urban legend...Or is that what they want you think. Discuss your theories.
And lastly. What did the ancients know about video that we don't. We don't have the answer but maybe you know something? Discuss your findings

"Bring out yer dead!".."Wait I'm not dead yet!"..(Sound Austrian here) "WRONG !!" (You know what happens next..)

One good reason to become a member is so that you can easily keep up with what is happening in the "OLED TVs: Technology Advancements Thread" and be amazed at how much we humans can speculate about something that doesn't actually exist ! rolleyes.gifwink.gifsmile.gif

Everybody trumps Scott. And where else can you join a forum knowing that you can trump someone 100% of the time without trying? wink.gif

Seriously, if you need to wipe out a day where everything went wrong and you feel like a idiot, just join AVS and read a few posts. While most posts provide valuable knowledge and insights, you will find so much info that you know to be absolutely wrong and misinformed or fan boy biased, you can look like a star.

Scott. I hope this post was something you were looking for. smile.gif

10. You need to tell everyone that your new AVR with 125 watts is so much more powerful sounding that your old AVR with 95 watts... It isn't.

9. You can't wait to share how great your Bose life style system is with other people into audio!

8. HDMI trouble HDMI trouble HDMI trouble.

7. You love anywhere you can end every other sentence with a emoticon! wink.gif

6. You're awesome at answering requests for help with: "Read the manual."

5. You're looking for a place loaded with single ladies to chat with.

4. You heard the official Audyssey thread was a harmonious and peaceful place to relax and hangout.

3. What do you mean Bose isn't the best? Are questioning the integrity of the salesman?

2. You paid a fortune for a small improvement in sound and now pride forces you to not only tell yourself it's way better, but encourage other's to do the same upgrade you did if they want to take it to the next level.

And drum roll...

1. My subjective opinion trumps your subjective opinion.

Top Ten Reasons to Join AVS Forum:

10. Cnet just doesn't do it for you anymore
09. You're sick of biting your tongue when people try to "show off" with a HTIB and a 42 inch-er.
08. Although the world thinks JVC sucks at everything, you know for a fact that JVC sucks at everything except home theater projectors...
07. You need people who understand that those extra 2Hz of inaudible bass extension are indeed worth that $3000 you just spent on a new subwoofer
06. Learn the difference between a monoblock and a cinderblock
05. You need a place where the terms "woofer" and "dog" are not synonymous.
04. You can get solid advice on hiding the body If your wife ever threatens to prevent future HT purchases.
03. You're tired of explaining that a tweeter is not a social network
02. Tell 5K runners that you plan to do "4K" in 2014...

and finally...

01. You understand that, while 8 inches does (or might) make your wife smile, it is not an adequate driver diameter for a subwoofer
